I have developed a milieu where there are two species of homonids. One being Homo sapiens the latter being an enlightened species evoling from them.

I am thinking Homo excellens based from the latin, superior.

How does that sound?

Does it ring true?

Sure. Sounds good to me.

Gregory Benford has a book called Beyond Infinity where there is a highly evolved human species called the Supras.

Depending on the attitude of the enlightened humans who are apparently naming themselves, then yes, that could sound appropriate.

It sounds the sort of name an 'improved' (in their own eyes) human species might use. Homo sapiens is hubristic enough; Homo excellens is even more so, but isn't that just like us?

I'm sticking with it then. Thanks for your feedback.

Is this what they call themselves? (If so, where did they pick up the Latin term?) Do they think of themselves as superior? Do the Homo Sapiens think that?

(Homo Sapiens literally means "wise man.")

They consider themselves the enlightened.Their counsil governs the system which includes a post cataclysmic Earth and several colonies.

They didn't name themselves excellens. They were a product of a secret society of evolutionist before Earth fell thousands of years prior.

I think Homo Excellens is the best name I've seen for evolved humans. Magneto called the mutants Homo Superior, I've also seen Nietzschiens people who were created on the principles of Nietzsche.

I better turn in my application at the patent office

Well, if "enlightened" is the key word here, how about Homo illuminatus? (The exact ending of the Latin adjective would need someone more thoroughly versed in Latin than I am.)

I thought of that also, but it makes me think glow in the dark skin

I wasn't there, but I think the scientists were trying to evolve superior, at least mentally, beings.

Homo excellens Do have some extaordinary traits.

Here's my two cents. Although I really like Homo Excellens (has a great ring to it and meaning), it sounds like an author trying to be a scientist, if you get my drift. It IS catchy, but not very convincing from a science standpoint. It works for me if you don't necessarily have a scientific audience.
