Hi everyone,

I’ve been away from the forum for a little while (a two month old does that to you) and I meant to post this earlier.

Stephen Ramey (SteveR) is a finalist for the WOTF for this quarter. He’s also one of the editors of the Triangulation anthology. He has previously brought up on the forum that he offers critiques for anyone who buys a copy of the anthology directly from him:

He's explained the reasoning behind his offer somewhere else on the forum (in a thread somewhere).

Anyway, Stephen has kindly done a critique of one of my stories and it was one of the best critiques I’ve ever received, insightful, precise and full of intelligent suggestions. I strongly recommend taking up his offer.

I will second Steve's fantastic critiquing ability. He recently critiqued a very short start for my novel. Every bit of advice he gave was spot on.

Well he critiqued a story of mine and his comments were outstanding. I learned more about writing from this single critique (over 30 on a memoir piece) then I did from all the ones I received before joining Hatrack.

I'd also say there are some good stories in the Triangulation Anthology. I have read 3 so far, and particularly enjoyed "Making Friends."

Hi Osiris,

By way of bumping this thread, I'll note that the author of "Making Friends" is a woman in my writing group, Kylie Bullivant. She's very talented.

Anyway, people go buy the anthology and get a critique from Steve. It's worth it.

Osiris, it’s quite an interesting experience seeing everyone else in the writing group get publications…sigh…seriously, it’s quite gratifying. The main battle is to keep the writing group together and focused. Most writing groups don’t last, because the members aren’t professional and focused. If the group is focused, success (for the group as a whole, if not for individuals) is an almost inevitable by-product in my opinion.

Absolutely agree with you Nick. My group is going into its 5th meeting (we meet monthly), and I've instated some rules to promote exactly the focus you talk about. All submissions for crits have to be in SMF, with line numbers so people can refer to specific locations, and I just instated removal policies for inactive members and a credit system to track and reward participation.
