Big thanks to snapper for putting together the WOTF Book Prize Challenge (back in Sep 2010) that spawned this story and all of the good folks who critiqued it!

I'm not real big on competition and I'm even less big on triggers and suchlike. My own ideas take up all my time.

I still want my soda, however.

Ethereon, I read your story, and I loved it. Really, it was excellent.

Congrats on the sale, you certainly deserved it.

Liked that story but loved your bovine tale so much more. What happened to that one?

Merlion, I don't blame you for not joining in. Ethereon beats all our brains in. But as far as competitions go, submitting your work for publication is in itself a competition.

The bvine one got caught in "the great missfile" at Escape Pod. I expect to get a rejection soon!

No...it isn't. And even if it be a competition, in the very broad sense that there are more submissions to each publication than can be published and some are picked and some are not, it is not a contest, because rejection doesn't indicate losing or inferiority. Most rejections are based on fit. Every story I've sold has been rejected multiple times. All a rejection means is, that particular editor didn't choose to buy the story at that particular moment...it isn't a "loss" in the way of losing a contest or in a competitive sport.
