Opening chapter for a dark humor/mystery type novel. (Sorry, not sci-fi or fantasy).

I’m a cop, and a damned good one. I’m also a murderer, and a damned good one. I’ll admit, this is a problem.
That was why I was getting help.
I choked down my nervousness like you choke down that first shot of hard liquor before you’re drunk enough to convince yourself you like it, and opened the big, wooden door of the Presbyterian church, the one over on Fifth and Jefferson. I was greeted in the lobby by an easel holding a sheet of neon orange poster board with the words “DRUG ADDICT RECOVERY SUPPORT GROUP TONIGHT” written with marker in big, sloppy block letters. As my eyes adjusted to the dim lighting inside the church, I became aware of a mousy little old woman in a gray, button-up sweater standing patiently at my elbow.

What do you think? Does this catch your interest?

Anyone care to read the whole chapter? (10 pages).

My quick take: sounds interesting. If I hadn't just watched the whole second season of Dexter (which has - to my mind - a VERY similar premise) I'd probably have wanted to read more, but I'm currently OD'd on this sort of thing.

I thought the story caught my attention, but ...I hate to admit it, but I'm a big fan of Dexter, and that very thought caught in my mind as well. Is this a Dexter-type novel?. Sorry.

I've never seen Dexter, but I think it's about a serial killer who kills other serial killers, right. That is not what this is.

Dexter's a cop (well, forensic specialist) as well as a serial killer. He specializes in killing bad guys (who might or might not be serial killers) and the major overarching plot line of the second season is about him joining a rehab group (ostentatiously for a drug addiction, really for his addiction to killing).

Like it. Like the style.
At first I thought there was something inconsistent about it but after re-reading it realised there wasn't.
Never seen Dexter so not tainted by that similarity. Willing to read 1st chapter.

Cheers

Wow. I took some stuff from Dexter without ever seeing it. Whatever, there are still some fundamental differences. I'm not going to worry about it. I'll sen you the chapter when I get home tomorrow, Ade. Thanks for the offer.

I've read the Dexter books. Not similar. I'll take a chapter - sounded intriguing. If a self-help group focuses on honesty for recovery, how will a murdering cop get it off his conscience without giving away his freedom? Or will he?
