Hello everyone,

I'm a 27 year old software developer from San Francisco. I completed my first SF novel in August 2008 and have also written a few SF short stories since then. ( I've posted some on my blog at http://scifishortstories.blogspot.com )

I've been looking for a place to learn about SF marketing and get help refining my work. This place seems perfect! I stumbled upon it shortly after reading through the Science Fiction Writer's Market Place and Sourcebook. That particular guide was a great reference, unfortunately it was published 14 years ago. I imagine a lot has changed in the SF publishing world since then and I'm anxious to learn all about it.

Orson Scott Card's novel Ender's Game was the reason I became an avid SF reader as a teen. Speaker for the Dead is still my favorite novel of all time (although nobody else seems to feel the same way).

I'm looking forward to interacting with other forum members. Until now I haven't had a place to gather feedback on my work. Instead, I've been injecting my family and friends with a healthy dose of my writing (a prescription which not all of them are fond of).

I'm particularly interested in the subject of artificial intelligence. I've been fascinated with the idea since childhood and it's partly the reason why I pursued a career in software development. Lately I've been playing with hard SF where I can utilize my knowledge of programming languages. Is hard sf still marketable? The SF Writer's Marketplace said it was in demand in 1994... today it seems like a lot of space opera is popular (don't get me wrong, I love me some Scalzi and the like).

Cutting myself off now. See you all around the forums.

First question: Can I join the peanutsofdoom?

And second: Why the bloody censored does everybody but me have to be a software engineer?

You're not alone! Speaker for the Dead is one of my favorites of all time too. Why all the bad rep?

Welcome, I'm also new, and know nothing about marketing besides, so I doubt I'll be able to help in that regard, but still... welcome. (:

I guess I lean more toward fantasy or SF that borderlines fantasy. I just couldn't get into SPEAKER FOR THE DEAD though I did like Ender's Game. The Alvin Maker stories were more my cup of tea.

Care to join us for lunch? I'll show you around the kitchen and then you can join the rest of us. I'm having my lunch out on the deck, though you can eat in the dining room if you wish. There's always someone to keep you company most anywhere in our magical treehouse.

Welcome to Hatrack .

Welcome to Hatrack Andrew McLennan-Murray!

There must be a software engineer lounge around here somewhere. It's bound to be a crowded place.
Anyway, roam around, have fun.
