I was wondering if anyone would allow me to email my first short story to them for comments. I don't really want to post it up because i'm very new to writing and i'm not very confident with it. I'm having a hard time with it now, I know there is something wrong with it but I thought if someone else looked at it, they might could see what that is clearer than me. I very open to it being trashed, i'd just like any kind of opinion really, however negative it might have to be. Thanks a lot!!!

If you are afraid to take the comments in the F&F forum, I can assure you they won't be any easier to swallow if someone gives you a thorough critique on the side. Critiques tend to bruise the ego, and everyone on Hatrack completely understands that fact. Regardless of the expressed opinions about what you may have written, we are all friends here who have a sincere desire to help each writer improve. Always keep that in mind with any critique: "This is one person's opinion and they are saying it to help me improve."

I would be happy to look over your work, but I would like to second what Elan said. No one here would trash your work no matter how harsh the critique may seem. We are just here to help each other get better, after all practice does make perfect where writing is concerned. E-mail addresses are the second icon at the top of each post if you want me to take a peek.

You don't have to post the first thirteen lines of your story. You can post a short description of the story, or of the main character, or the origin of the story idea, or whatever. It's also important to remember that by looking over the feedback users post about your first thirteen lines, you find out not only whether they're willing to critique your story but whether you're willing to take their critiques.
If you remain shy about exposing your work to Frag & Feed, you can still try to form a reciprocal arrangement so that you're getting critiques in a context of the type of writing preferred by your critics. In other words, by reading their stories critically you'll know a lot more about how to interpret their critiques of your own stories.

I'll read it. I think you're probably better off posting in the forum... critiques tend to be less harsh where everyone else can see them. But if you feel better with e-mail, go ahead and try me! I don't write that well but I can try commenting your story

Dude, I'm in the same boat. I'm new to the game too. I would be more than happy to read. The only pre-req is that you are willing to do the same when I get something that I would not mind being shredded.

PS. I would at least post 13 lines in here. People may be harsh trust me but its worth it.
I'd be happy to read it, too. Hopefully, once you see what it's like to take critiques in a more private setting (email), you'll be open to posting publicly. It is a little nerve-wracking the first few times you open yourself up to public critique, but it really is an excellent learning tool! Besides, everybody here is as nice as can be with their critiques, so nobody is going to tell you you're hopeless and to give up.
If you'd like to email me with your story, please do, but I may not be able to get to it until Sunday.
I'd be happy to take a look at it. My critiqueing(sp? I'm tired) would be thorough, but I like to think I have a way with words that makes people comfortable. Guess that's part of working a help desk.
When taking the critiques, though, you just need to stop and realize that we aren't saying you did a bad job, or you're no good. What we're saying is that we want to help you do better, and what we're doing by critiqueing(sp?) is just that. It's a learning process, and we're all here to help eachother learn, right?
