Well, since it seems that b eing a registered user on one section of Hatrack does not necessary mean that you are registered to all, I'll post here to my favorite area.

Ender's Shadow. Just read the paperback edition and was again amazed and happy with a well written novel. But -- did I read it too fast and missed something? I refer to this. The character Poke gets offed by villain Achilles when hero Bean is a young tyke. Her murder is by stiletto or other sharp blade through eye. ::time shift:: Older battle school veteran Bean gets even with villain Achilles and forces a confession to all villains murders. Murderer Achilles confesses to strangling Poke instead of 'poking' her to death with blade.

I also have to hand it OSC for a novel that amplies demonstrates a POV shift. Take Enders Game and Enders Shadow, and we have a new POV for same tale with same words. And it also shows how great an author OSC is where he can sell the same tale twice...

I'm not going to go hunting through my copy, but I believe....

Bean doesn't see the murder. He sees Poke floating dead in the water with her eyes stabbed out. He later knows Achilles is the murderer by the fact that he knows this fact also... Therefore, it is convicible that Achilles did strangle her to death, then stabbed her eyes out for the hell of it and dumped her in the river. in that case, saying, yes, I strangled her to death would make sense..

BTW, anyone finished Shadow of the Hegemon yet? I have... What did you think?

Gee all, and here I thought this little thread was dead...

TUML: Thanks. I have what I often feel is a bit of a failing; I am a natural fast reader. I finish a novel that size in just a bit under 2 hours. But I am also a serious re-reader as well, so I will doubtless re-read that book to death like I have with Ender's Game. I also wait for paperbacks since my shelf space is at a minimum. The only part of Shadow I've read is the part posted here.

Writer_Actress: Thanks. But my knowledge of writing is there because I think I am afraid of writing my stuff. I have short story rejections left and right, many with terms I had to look up to see where I went wrong. After all, "you need to learn to tell a story" what is that? I'm still not sure how to translate that one. When I wrote the story that got that on it, well, I THOUGHT I was telling a tale. Perhaps I should join a Writers Group for some feedback. I dunno.

Will.
