Well, they are being honest about what you'll get if you win. And you know how they're paying for it. They're also reasonably clear about the professional standards they follow, "guerilla marketing tactics" indeed!

If they accept fan fiction then I would start to worry at that point.

I think it sounds a bit fishy to me, too--especially when they abbreviate magazine with 'zine. I don't know, maybe that's just me, but the other thing is when they say that you can enter by phone, but they want your credit card handy. I don't have a credit card myself, but if I did, I certainly would not want to give my credit card number to someone over the phone.

I'm not too familiar with writing contests, but do they normally charge fees? Yet, whether they normally they do that or not doesn't really matter to me anyway as I refuse to pay a $50 fee for entering contests. I am, after all, a poor college student. I can't afford to pay for contests like that.

Nevertheless, I'm a bit leery of this contest.

Whether or not a contest charges a fee depends on the contest. Many don't charge any fee at all (beyond the postage they force you to pay). Most reputable contests charge only a nominal fee, since they are funded either by sales of the finished publication or by community grants.

Generally, a contest that is funded entirely by entry fees collected by the contestants should be considered a bit fishy. It's essentially a form of gambling. And in this case, it would seem that the outcome is probably rigged, if you define that term broadly. After all, the point of the contest is to celebrate successful self-published works, yet they're inviting unpublished and unpublishable (not just the fan fics, either) authors to enter.

That's always a danger when you fund a contest by entry fees. There's simply too much of a temptation to aggressively sell the contest to people who have no real chance of winning. It's one of the reasons that funding a contest that way virtually guarentees that it will be meaningless.
