As some of you may know, English is not my first language, meaning from time to time I have trouble with some words.
I'm struggling with this question at the moment: what do you call the overhanging part of a roof? Eaves or cornice? Web references have been incapable of telling me which is the right one.

Thanks in advance

Eaves would be most easily understood.

I think you want to use "eaves." If the picture towards the center of the page at this link eaves is what you see in your mind when you speak of an "overhanging part of a roof," then that's it.

A "cornice" is more akin to a decorative molding than to a roof overhang, though it can be used several different ways depending on whether you speak of a wall, the exterior roof of a building, the meeting of wall to ceiling, or a window.

(EDIT: Forgot the link.)

Cornice would be a moulding around the edge of a ceiling or under the eaves.
