I electronically submitted a memoir to a magazine on March 15th and their web site says they respond in two months, but I haven’t heard anything. My problem is that there is a memoir contest I just found out about that I would like to submit the piece to if the magazine isn’t interested in it. I e-mailed them a courteous follow up a week ago and still nothing. What should I do? Should I go ahead and submit the piece in the contest?

Send an inquiry with a SASE via snail mail.

You have a decision to make. Decide how long you can afford to wait before the contest window closes. Pick your drop-dead date and if the first market doesn't respond to your query, send them a withdrawal notice short and to the point. Do not provide a reason.

quote:
Dear Magazine Editor:

This letter (e-mail) is official notice that I am withdrawing my story, "Retched Bletches" from consideration for publication in Magazine.

Regards,

Neoindra

Save a copy of the notice in your files and submit elsewhere.

I know. Unfortunately, e-mail submissions are the only ones this magazine accepts. I don’t know what when wrong though, I’ve always received prompt rejections from them in the past.

You could send a follow-up email. Most publishers allow for follow-ups if the time has passed. If you really want to submit it to the contest... follow Spaceman's advice.
