How's this for about as near a miss as you can get?

This is a mighty fine story, but it's more of a historical fiction piece than would fit with ...

... If we do create the second magazine and if you haven't sold this story by then it'd be an obvious first-issue choice.

I've removed the name of the publication because some of the content was worded as if told in confidence.

It's nice the publishers are figuring out what we've always known. Congrats! Sounds like that one will be selling soon, as soon as you can find the right match!

They'd better hurry with that second magazine, then. It sounds like you've got some mailing to do.

Well, that is a damn nice rejection. At least they promised you a publication if they do release the second magazine, which hopefully they will do for you

Thats great, especially since there are already publishers buying historical fiction. Sounds like you can go for the long dollar on this one.

That's a rejection that should be framed. Nice going.

Framed? Heh!

This isn't a particularly big zine, but Stan Schmidt, Sheila Williams, and Gordon Van Gelder also get stories they like but can't use. When you start getting this kind of note from those folks, you know you are close.
