Did You write? 04-21-08
.
As an attempt to prompt all of us to write regularly, I write these notes each week. The idea is to give each of us a regular deadline to work towards to get some production done. The hope is that you see the deadline coming, and you get to your keyboard and write a few words, or edit something to be able to say you wrote.
I consider writing as, Any new writing, of course. I also any editing, even if it is someone else's work. Poetry, articles, world building as long as something goes on paper. It can also be E-mailing, as long as it is long notes and writing related. There are others and it is up to you to set the definitions.
I have not decided if these notes have helped my writing. There are times where I will realize I have the note and need to report something and get to writing. Other times where proving that I am not a wasted drag on society because I did not write, is not important. I tend to write only on Sunday when I have some extra time in the morning to work.
As for me, Yes, I did write. In the time I had available, I wrote about two pages single spaced. It was fun to watch the words flow out of the keyboard. I went from 2700 words to 4171 words, a total of 1471 additional words. Compared to what some of you write, it is not much, but it was something. For me it was quite a bit for the time I had to work, about an hour and a half, two hours.
This Waxy Dragon story is where she and her teddy bears are taken to a nursing home for retired magic users to meet the sister of one of the teddy bears. I now have them there and they have the sister. This is a story I started before but the laptop died with the story on there. I rewrote this in a lighter form, and am actually about where I was when the laptop died. I like this version a whole lot better. I cannot wait to the next time I can dig into it.

I had three versions of a story I tried to write earlier this year. Out of frustration, I sent all three versions to my writing partner. Using one as the core of the story, she took the choice pieces of the other two versions and finished the story. It came out pretty good. I now have to go through it in detail, adding some scenes I feel it needs and then do light editing otherwise. Editing it will take a while, and then I will send it back to her for her re-editing my changes. I will have editing to my credit in the next note, I hope.

I am still going good on my story ideas. I am in a period of coming up with new ideas to post. In my last post, I told about the eight ideas I came up with over the weekend. At one point before then, I was near ready to dig into my older notes. Well, since my last note here, I posted seven ideas and my stack is now sixteen notes. I like to have a lot of choices to post. it makes my job easier.

I had a wood turning club meeting last week and there is a carving club that meets at the same place at the same time. I showed off some pencil heads and earrings I made recently. One of the wives of the wood turners ended up buying a cowboy boot earring set, and two of my pencil heads. I had carved a woman pencil head and she said it looked something like her. It did. Of course, everything is still priced to cheep. I do like their money more than my wood....
I had a problem with my lathe. Other than needing a serious cleaning, the problem turned out to be the plug. A wire in the plug itself overheated and broke. We found it by a process of elimination. The lathe now has a new cord on it. It happens that when I went to work today, I found the cord to my computer's trackball broken. I took a mouse from a computer not in use at the moment. Trackballs are so much better for the graphics I am doing than the mouse.
I started a new fairy carving. She is coming along pretty good so far. This one and the previous one came out of the wood a whole lot faster than any large carving before. What I have shows the actual body position with the limbs in place. It is fun to get to this point. It is still blocky, but people know what they are looking at.

AS to the question of the day,
Yes, I did write.

Did you write?

Yes, five hundred [my daily minimum] and more on this new story, "Asteroid Cluster." I get to drag that hack mystery writer, Elia D'Chovrinski, into another story. This time he's a little more involved than just one of his books being mentioned. Unfortunately, this time there is no place -- so far -- for the infamous Mars Corp in the story although my pov character is one of the Mars born.

It's kind of fun building up this future interplanetary civilization through several different stories.

Yes. A few words on a new short story, and some editing/critiquing on someone else's fragment.

Yep, I've been at it too

I have a daily minimum of three hundred words, and I've been reaching or way exceeding that. Sometimes it's a real pain to get anything done though, on those days when every word has to be dragged kicking and screaming into the light...

Regards,

Paul

Yes. As usual, I'm scrambling to get my WotF entry done in time to edit and polish...

I "dreamed" a new story in the hazy time before getting up out of my day-off bed...it was one of those "lurid" stories that pop up in those situations, but this one seems to have more plot and character than most so I wrote up an outline and then wrote a chunk of the story.

But my other story was reaching a climactic moment, so I worked a little on that.

But not much work. Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday only. The other days were hellishly busy with life, more so than usual...overtime (and grievance filing) at work...illness, mine and in my family, and covering this and that because of it...a leaking kitchen faucet led also to the discovery of a rusting-out disposal unit...

So far the faucet leak is fixed and the illnesses are slightly improved. I'll get a new disposal, and the overtime was an error (for which I'll see that I'm paid). The rest of my life goes on at its usual pace, and, though I may not get to writing today, I'll try tomorrow. With two stories bursting at the seams, I sure don't lack for material.

(By the way, I decide on which story to work on by flipping a coin..."heads" I do the earlier story, "tails" I do the later. Both live in my mind right now.)

((Also also, my reply was earlier cut off...I'm having either trouble in cyberspace or with my phoneline, I'm not sure which. Some sort of high-speed connection seems to be looming soon in my life, soon as I can sort it out.))

Would you believe I had a snow day? No work and no way out of my driveway. It was the worst spring storm (in volume of snow) in recorded history. So yes, I wrote. More than usual.
