05-12-08 did you write?

Another week arrives to brag about your accomplishments, cry about your failures, and otherwise tell about what is happening in your life.
The idea of this note is to prod myself, and the rest of you also, into writing regularly. It gives a short term goal to aim for, a short term deadline. It does not really work for me as I am good at coming up with excuses for not writing.
Just about anything can be considered writing, though some are less acceptable than others. I consider writing as any new writing. It is also any editing, even if it is not your own. It is also world building if one is getting stuff on paper, blogging, especially if it is writing related, articles or writing assignment. I will even consider E-mails as writing, as long as they are several pages long and best related to writing.
As mentioned, I cam good at coming up with excuses for not writing. In this case, I had a phone call with my writing partner and we talked for a couple hours. She has a nice voice. The phone call hit when I normally write so I had to give something up. I cannot write and talk at the same time. I can listen to anything and write, but I cannot talk and write. I got no writing done this week.

I am doing well on my story ideas. E-mail discussions with my writing partner seeded a couple ideas this week. Including the story idea I am posting tonight, I have nineteen story ideas at the side of my computer. This is after posting seven ideas this week. I had seventeen ideas next to my computer last week. I am happy with many of the new ideas.

I painted a mother's day card for my mom and for my writing partner this week. I found I am satisfied when I painted a card. My mom had daffodils and roses, while my writing partner got daffodils. I also picked up a flowering plant for my mom. I got a long hug from her. I liked th at...
Mom had me helping her with her garden on Saturday. We even went out to buy some flowers. That was fun.
I made a baby rattle Sunday. My nephew had a baby boy this week so I made a present for the baby. I was concerned about breakage so I made it thick, and it is too heavy for a new born. it looks pretty good even so. It has been sort of a present kind of day, makes me almost feel like Santa Claus in some ways.

As to the question of the day, I have to admit, NO I DID NOT WRITE.

Did you write?

Does polishing -- editing -- count? I did not write any on a new story but I am working on a draft of one I already wrote trying to get it ready to send off to the Heinlein contest/

Yes, I did. I'm still pounding away on my first draft--currently at 11,250 words...

[Edited to add:]

I'm glad you do these posts, rstegman. If I haven't written anything by the time you post these, it forces me to. I won't reply until I at least write one sentence (which, as most of us know, never stops at just one sentence). I thought you'd like to know that it makes a difference--at least for one Hatracker. Thanks.

This was my week to work on cyber-related issues.

What brief time I spent writing was in the form of researching new markets for my SF and potential agents for my YA work, dictating notes to my digital recorder, and staring at the screen in wonderment of why my words weren't cooperating.

S!
S!...C!

Slogging away at editing a battle scene. The description I did earlier is OK, but it needs breaking up; it can't just be description.

After a weekend in the hospital, I finally got my rough draft of my WOTF entry done this morning. I thought I would never finish. Now time to make revisions on my Heinlein piece while this one cools with readers.

*Sigh of relief*

Yes! And count me in the group that loves these posts, rstegman. I'm glad you ask.

This week I did, I wrote a whole new short story in one of the Liberty Hall Flash challenges and I'm excited because I'm really really proud of the piece, and it's doing well in the challenge/competition (a light week with only 4 qualifying entries, but still - I've never won one, it'll be a Big Deal to me if I do.) It gave me a chance to explore a theme I've had in my head for a while but no reasonable creative outlet for it.

I've also finally collected the crits for my Clone story onto one marked-up paper copy so now I have the roadmap for my editing pass. Need to actually MAKE that editing pass, LOL, but that'll get done. Collecting the crits was the harder task, IMHO, particularly when you get three diverging points of view on a passage. I've done the hard work of deciding what to do in each place now, so that's great.

I still need to make progress with my WOTF entry and polish/send out for crit my Luna story. But I'm pleased with where I am. Phew. It's been a slow start to the year this year, I need to stay focused on writing, it is such fun for me and makes me feel good. Not sure why then I procrastinate it so much? Hmm...
