"There are truths, that are beyond us, transcendent truths, about beauty, truth, honor, etc. There are truths that man knows exist, but they cannot be seen - they are immaterial, but no less real, to us. It is only through the language of myth that we can speak of these truths."
--J.R.R. Tolkien

"I always try to write on the principle of the iceberg. There is seven-eighths of it under water for every part that shows. Anything you know you can eliminate and it only strengthens your iceberg. It is the part that doesn't show. If a writer omits something because he does not know it then there is a hole in the story."
-Ernest Hemingway

Tell all the Truth But Tell It Slant

Tell all the Truth but tell it slant—
Success in Circuit lies
Too bright for our infirm Delight
The Truth's superb surprise

As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind—

Emily Dickinson

Marvelously inspiring arspoetics, like metafiction except in poetry. Poetry about writing poetry.

"If you write,
you are a writer.
If you are not talented,
you won't get published as often, or at all."

Nothing interferes with my concentration. You could put on an orgy in my office and I wouldn't look up. Well, maybe once. --Isaac Asimov

Writing, to me, is simply thinking through my fingers. --Isaac Asimov

Time is the fire in which we burn. --Gene Roddenberry

Always be yourself... unless you suck. --Joss Whedon

You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you. --Ray Bradbury

Don't think. Thinking is the enemy of creativity. It's self-conscious and anything self-conscious is lousy. You cannot try to do things. You simply must do things. --Ray Bradbury

My stories run up and bite me on the leg-I respond by writing down everything that goes on during the bite. When I finish, the idea lets go and runs off. --Ray Bradbury

Cheers,
Pat

I'm not sure who said it, but it's something like:

Good novels are never finished. They're abandoned.

It's a paraphrase of Leonardo da Vinci :
quote:
Art is never finished, only abandoned.

Anyone have any references for the asimov quotes? That thinking through the fingers, in particular, is so apt for me. I'd like a weblink, though.

Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal.
-- T.S. Eliot

Confound him who in this place set up a sundial,
to cut and hack my days so wretchedly into small portions.
-- Plautus (200 BC)
