After doing two hours of this weekend workshop at Worldcon, and after getting a ton of requests over the years for us to do these again, we’ve decided to go again. Twice. First time in at least ten years. And maybe the last. <g>

So, feel free to pass these on to anyone who is even interested and talking about wanting to write. Open to anyone at any level.

Workshop Name:
THE WRITING CAREER FROM THE FIRST SENTENCE TO PUBLICATION AND BEYOND. Aka, the Kris and Dean Show.

Taught by Kristine Kathryn Rusch and Dean Wesley Smith.

Kris is the international bestselling author of over 90 novels and hundreds of short stories. She has been nominated and won just about every major award in four genres. She’s the only writer in history to have a story in all four Dell magazines during the same year. (Asimov’s, Analog, Ellery Queen, and Hitchcock’s). She’s the only person to have won a Hugo award for both professional editing and for her writing. She spent six years as the editor of the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. Her mystery novels and stories have been nominated for three Edgar Awards, and she’s won the Ellery Queen award three times. She’s been a full time fiction writer for over 20 years.

Dean is the bestselling author of over 90 books and a hundred short stories. He has over seven million copies of his books in print. He’s written in just about every major universe and every genre, plus written comics for DC and scripts for Hollywood. He has also been an editor and publisher and for ten years he edited the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds anthology for Pocket Books. He’s been nominated for a ton of awards and with Kris won the World Fantasy Award for his work on Pulphouse Publishing. He’s known for being able to write fast and in any world. He is hired regularly by New York publishers to ghost novels and rescue other writers who are stuck. He also writes thrillers and paranormal romance under pen names. He’s been a full time fiction writer for over 20 years.

Kris and Dean are married and live in a three building compound overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

This workshop covers everything, starting from craft and story structure, how to write stories, how to get to the computer to write, and then follows manuscripts into publishing houses, teaching how to get your work read by both short fiction editors and novel editors. Detailed information about what happens to your manuscripts in editor’s offices, how stories are bought and why. And when you need an agent and how to get one. Also a lot of information about how to simply sit down and write, how to get your family to help you, how to become a selling professional fiction writer. The two bestselling authors will also answer any question about the business as the two days go on.

Looks interesting. The timing is also intriquing. I'm going to apply for the OSC Workshop this year, so I'll have to wait to see if I get accepted before I can drop money on this one.

Well, you can read my notes from several years ago (they're copyrighted 1996), to get an idea of what they have to say.

Edited to add: they will certainly have added a lot of up-to-date information that we didn't even dream of back in 1996.

KDW,

I'm signed up for "Kris 'n Dean" come June, and I also met you very briefly at LTUE this past weekend.

Thanks for sharing your past experiences with "Kris 'n Dean," since they've absolutely whetted my appetite and I am very revved up to attend.

=^)

Ah, Brad. I didn't connect that I had met the Brad R Torgersen. Please forgive me?

I discovered, to my chagrin, that the "slight" hearing loss in my left ear may not be as "slight" as I thought it was, because I had trouble hearing exactly what some people were saying to me, especially when I was in a room where there was a lot of background noise and people were talking to me from my left.

Need to make another appointment with an audiologist, I guess.

No worries! I would not expect you to remember me, as LTUE seemed packed and our interaction was quite brief. Thanks again for the link. I am hoping to make the "Kris n' Dean" event very productive, and it's nice to know what I can possibly expect.
