I just discovered a great book series by Adrian Tchaikovsky called Shadows of the Apt. I'm not plugging it though, not really, I'm just perplexed by it. The first of four books was copyrighted in 2010. That's four books in less than 2 years. I've read that he had them all ready to go before he sent his first query.

Since when did publishers start flooding the market like this?

Maybe it was a reissue? I looked it up and it does seem he writes very very fast, or maybe he had a bunch in the cooker by the time he got a publisher.

Its not uncommon for an author by the time he/she lands a publishing deal to have 3-4 books done. Remember if you take the advice and write, submit, write, add the time line of a year to land an agent, a year to land a publisher and bamn you have several books done.

It isn't the writing speed, it's the publishing speed! On his webpage it says he had four books done and ready to go before his first submission (for the series).

I thought publishers normally liked to push out maybe one book a year for a series. When did publishers start publishing whole series all at once?

It could be the publisher. Or the deal he got. Some writers will get a contract for two or up to six novels, even though many times it seems to be a three novel deal.

I do know that I have read series where the first two to four books seem to come out very quickly than it slows down to one per year.

Sometimes though publishers seem to be strange animals; contradicting themselves and doing unusual things at times.

The Pyr blog (the US publisher) seems to suggest that the first 3 books had already been published in the UK. The 2010 copyright could very well be the US Pyr copyright date and not first publication.

I know this is how Naomi Novik got published. The publisher released her first three (maybe four?) books one month after another. Their thoughts were that the books would sell more that way. The publishers have been experimenting in the past few years, trying to figure out what works.
