Eric James Stone has donated some prizes to Jake Black's cancer fundraiser. Jake Black is a comic book and TV writer of kid's stuff (Ben 10, Batman Brave and the Bold, Toy Story) who recently beat cancer and is working to dig out of all of the debt it left him and his family with. He also wrote the "Authorized Ender Companion" book, the encylopedia of the Ender's Game universe.

Eric James Stone has donated a couple of prizes, including a signed copy of his short story anthology and the one I thought folks here might be interested in: a critique of a short story of up to 7,500 words.

Eric just won the Nebula for his story That Leviathan, Whom Thou Hast Made.

The critique is for the first $50 donation to request it with the hashtag #critique. Even if you can't do $50, though, it's a good cause so whatever you can do would help.

Read all about it here:

I'm down for $50.
Even if I don't win the critique, I'd sure want someone to help me out if I was facing this kind of debt.

I have an extra soft spot in my heart for those facing high medical costs. This year I'm paying crazy taxes to the Gov and yet I'm still laying out $1k per month in after tax health care costs - only to have deductibles for each visit/prescription/hospitalization.

It's insane.

Yeah, when we were first married, we went through it with my wife's heart. She had open heart surgery the same weekend we were supposed to be married. There wasn't just medical debt, but all the debt she'd incurred during the time she was trying to get her life figured out and was unemployed--and a misdiagnosis led to some bad employment decisions that led to more debt.

It's a tough place to be in, and, like you, I totally empathize with him.
