Anyone interested in getting some hangouts going? It could be good inspiration.

Goog + still won't let me in. I'm not one of the cool people, it seems.

Brilliant marketing. They are creating a demand through low supply, filling those not in with a strong desire to be accepted.

Then again, I could be the only one and they're all laughing at me.

*Shrug*

I'm down, Trina. Someday...

I'm thinking I want to use Google+ exclusively for writing networking. I believe to joing Google+, new people have to be invited by an existing member (of which I am not).

Facebook for me is basically a high school reunion, mixed with family and some friends, of which I typically exclude all reference to writing.

Meredith, I've invited you too.

I think Google+ is very exciting for writers, because of the control it will give us over what we share with who.

When I've reviewed a MS I'd like to get updates on it as it progresses, without the author necessarily having to tell me everything that's on his mind about anything he's doing. Then I might comment on the author's planned changes if anything strikes me without necessarily being on the editorial board for every revision.

I'm not one of the cool people either so I guess I'll have to wait until it goes public.

Oh, and because in the summer my writing sessions are squeezed in around the edges of family, life, cooking, etc., I'm more in the write for 20mins, chit-chat for 10 realm. Hopefully I get two cycles of that in, but most days not.

Cool stuff. Circles blows facebook out of the water.

How do we find other Hatrackers? I'm going by P.M. Snede in a psuedo-effort to separate my day job identity from my writing persona (that's how I've starting subbing short stories as of the last couple of months too). I only could find Meredith and Trina (didn't see Karen's in my search).

I'll send a message out to only the Hatrack circle and maybe we can do a sort of roll call. I think that'll work, you can comment back on my post and then everyone else should be able to find each other.

Found you, vernon. And the rest of those listed in this thread. Now I just wish they would create a way for us to add ourselves to ad-hoc groups that would exist outside of any one profile (create a "hatrack" circle that any of us on Hatrack could associate ourselves with, and then use to post statuses/messages to.) Ah, well, I'm still happy with it as another interesting networking platform. Definitely feels a better fit with "professional me" than facebook, where it's mostly a social exchange with friends and acquaintances (albeit an information-full one, as one of my favorite things about FB is all the links people provide to interesting stories.)

Hmm, no one commented on my half smart aleck question but :

After reading the article I see it's a live group meeting. It seems like it's going to be a little hard to get everyone on the right time schedule or is it like a chat room where everyone shows up whenever to see if someone is there?

Sounds like fun -we can each have out favorite beverage with us and discuss things live.

In my case though no video from my side.

I'm in. Yay. Thanks Trina.

I don't know how to get into the circle.

If it's video chat I can't do it because of the time of day I write, but if there's text or ideas, etc., I can hang.

My brother sent me an invite about a week ago, and I was thinking "oh great another social networking site, I guess that makes FB the new myspace."

But because of all your positive reviews, I guess I'll open it.

On a second note, the idea of a live chat for WCEG could be interesting...but then who has the time?

Which is the drawback I see. I don't have enough time now without adding another site to check...perhaps one will phase out the other though...I accept invite with trepidation.

I'm both interested and wary, like some others, I think it is a good idea and would like to participate, but I just don't know if I'll find the time.

I thought of Google+ while reading issue #1 of IGMS, Wolverton's story "A Rarefied View at Dawn", and thought it would be interested to have a weekly or monthly discussion of a short story, not so much as readers but as writers, discussing what we felt worked or didn't. Just throwing the idea out there.

Okay, we're getting a party.

As far as the hangouts, just do them when you feel like. We are all on vastly different schedules so jump in when you can. I'll start one sometime this week for sure. Otherwise, the neat thing here is that you can share with just a specific group, so if you want to talk about writing stuff with us, the whole world won't see it.

So axe, EVOC, enigmaticuser and Foste, let us know what your name is on Google+ so we can find you. I will try to keep everyone together. If in doubt, just add me to a circle and I'll get notice and pick you up from there. I'm on as Trina Phillips. No picture yet, but soon.

Apparently I'm listed under my real name. Ain't that a bummer.
I have to say the whole circle thing is a learning curve. I think I uploaded some old pictures, but I'm not sure where they landed.
I sounds like such a curmudgeon.

I'm just sticking people under friends for now, but it seems that will get confusing if I throw say a friend from high school in there.

I'm under my real name which isn't bad but can that be changed ?

And thanks for the invite, it really does sound like a good thing if I ever get the hang of it.

We don't have to all call it the same thing. If you scroll down on the little pop up that lets you put people in circles, it'll let you create a new circle. Mine's just called writers.

I'm not quite sure what all this is about.
Nor how it works.
Or what benefits it will provide to all involved.
Am I showing my age? Or my social ineptitude?
[I only recently learned how to traverse Facebook (and I don't go far,or go often)].
Anyway, thank you for the invite MattLeo.

Respectfully,

I think it would be really cool to have an interactive live writing conference. Headcount would have to be limited, but it would be a great way to share "face-to-face" without buying an expensive airline ticket. I think G+ provides this opportunity.

It is similar to Facebook, but not derivative, with a greater focus on interaction than Facebook's games, silly apps, and profile glorification.

Dr. Bob - I sent you an invite so you you can check it out.

Same instructions for start-up.

Note: I avoided Facebook altogether and chose to start my social media with G+.

Okay gang,

I'm going to try hosting a Writing Hangout this Wednesday, July 27th at 9:00 AM - Pacific Standard Time. PST is currently UTC/GMT -7 hours.
Hopefully you can join me.

Right now I'm going to follow the somewhat established framework because it sounds good to me. All creative adventurers are welcome; you don't have to write.

At the top of the hour we talk and discuss for 15 minutes, then we stop and write for 45 minutes until the next top of the hour and then break and chat for 15 minutes again. I'm committing to two hours, possibly three.

My other available times are pretty late for most non-West Coasters so I hope this time can catch a few people. If you can't make this one, don't despair, there will be more. You can always run one according to your schedule, or just start one spontaneously while you're working and see who's out there.

So if you're on the fence this might be a good time to jump in. It'll give you a couple days to get in and get oriented. Let us know if you still need an invite.
