Do any of you do them? Do they actually make a difference?

I've knocked one up here. It's for my troll stories, but does it work?

Admittedly, I'm no movie maker (though if you Google P.D.Blake you will find my doppleganger, who is [Big Grin] ).

I took a peek. It's long for a promo trailer at 6:21 minutes. I would think 90 seconds would hold my interest better.

What did you do it on? I need to more promo to get my book sales off of the floor.

I haven't watched yours but here's a Writer's Digest site with something that could interest you. On that subject.

I don't know how much they help but I found one video by accident advertising a book I had just bought.

I think it was well done except for one small detail.

Then I'd split it into an intro video for the series and five shorter videos. I must admit, I stopped viewing after the first book and I think many others would as well. But then I've got the attention span of a flea.

Gave it a quick skim-through---six twenty-one does seem a little long for a promo.

Dunno...I mean the concept, not the execution...I never considered doing anything like it.

I would do one for a E-book I put out. That is if I had some skill in it or a program that had the skill for me.

Some people seem to expect something like that these days.

Ok, the consensus seems to be that it's too long, so I've taken the editorial axe to it and chopped it into bits:

The Great Egg Hunt

Tales From Under the Bridge

Blue Dragon Pie

A Job Of Debt

Trolympics

Just tried an animated version. What do you all think is better, the static ones or the animation?

I liked the animation, but I think you need a sound track with music to keep the thing going. It sort of dies when the troll stops. So link it with some of that sound track and I think that's better.

Not bad at all. The sound was a little off and it sounded more like a dinosaur to me but it gets the point across and captures the watchers' attention.

A little music could help probably.

I was trying to put music to it but MS Movie maker only allows one channel of sound.

I had to hand place all those odd sounds too [Big Grin]

Ok, got the music sorted. You just feed the video back in MS Movie Maker and add some more sound over the top.

The Trolls Are Back - with music

Better but for me at least the music could be a touch louder. But see if anyone else comments on that.

I don't know if any one took note of it yet--sorry, I'm too lazy at 6:00 in the morning to read everyone's responses--but I have had experience with the likes of the promos...mmm somewhat. Maybe not directly, but this video--although with nice creepy music in the background--just feels like a pretty query letter or synopsis to grab someone's attention. However, for video form, you expect people to be intrigued and interested. You need a real heart-stopper when opening up a video so that they don't stray away from the page, and it should be a bit shorter... perhaps 90 seconds like Owasm was saying. Instead of giving us words, because we will get enough of that when reading your book, instead give us maybe clips, or even pictures and some clips, but try to make the background, the music, and the clips or pictures mesh so that you can ultimately keep your audience intrigued, and by the time they finish the promo, they should really be intrigued and want to read your book. Even with promos that have clips and pictures with awesome music, first hand experience, some people still will feel like they don't have the time to check it out because a lot of people mainly think about themselves and don't really care about anyone else's lives or what they are doing unless it can grab them right off and keep them there so that they stay awhile. I suggest, to truly make this video effective, use not so much as a query letter in the video, because that's what this felt like, but actual clips IF you can or have the resources to do something like that. Not really CLIPS, but something like a little trailer like you might see for a movie, because then that not only gives a good visual of what's going on or what might happen, but it's also giving the audience something to look forward to and will interest them. They are more likely to want to read your book or story.

To be honest, when I watched your video, I wasn't all that interested because I had to try and keep up with your long query with music. I did LOVE the music, and I think it sounded good. Just, your audience, as you already know, aren't just us on Hatrack, but other people who aren't writers, who are just readers or are not readers, who DON'T KNOW you, and I don't think someone with little knowledge on WHO you are will be very interested in a long synopsis in video form. You also must take into consideration, try getting into the minds of people who MAINLY watch movies, because by far I am pretty sure the people who watch TV nowadays are more into TV than into books. That's just how things are. So I think, to make this even better, make it to where even the people who love TV and read hardly ever, will ALSO be interested. That will expand your audience, and make the people who love TV more than books to really say "Hey, this book looks like it could be good, looks like it will be worth my time" and they will turn off their TV's to do just that, because they already have an idea, and a visual of what is to come. =]

I would suggest to try another avenue, from this video, because so many people nowadays just don't really care to read, so you have to think like they do to ultimately get their attention, more so.

That's just my two cents, and all of it is strictly my opinion. =]

Also, I'm thinking, the shorter the better. 60 seconds could even work. People are so distracted by Facebook nowadays, and other windows being opened, that if the video is TOO long, they will say "I'm done here" and go somewhere else... Or, they might do it unintentionally and stray away from the page without really meaning to. Like, I did that, somewhat, to type my last message. I got a minute and a half in, and had to stray away from the page, but I do that with a lot of things, which is why I say the shorter the better. Because, someone with ADHD, I can say... us with ADHD, well, at least me, don't do things like that--stray away from pages to do something else--on purpose... It's just hard to focus on one thing for too long, but I am getting better with that. You just have to try and think like many different people in different audiences, and find a happy medium to get the most views and followers. =]

I'm sorry if I sound repetitive. You just got my fired up with this topic is all.

Okay, so this is not exactly a promo for a book, but this is something that me and my friends are doing, making a movie... I am the screenwriter, and I play a cop in this... I'm the deputy in the video... But just, check out how short it is and how effective it is. Yours will obviously be longer than this, but the point of this is for you to see the shorter the better, and plus... I do quite frankly love the video he made and want to spread the word as well. My friend is a genius.

He's the one directing and producing the film, and he plays the main character, but I loved what he did with this... It's not the trailer yet, we've just started, but it's just a little something we've got.

Also, if anyone here has a Facebook page, it would be really AWESOME if you could LIKE and SHARE the page. There's more on the page to check out to: clips, pics, and our progress as it stands. =]

My new version is only 45 seconds long now.

I can't see your movie though as I don't do facebook.

Oh okay. Awesome! Well, you beat me to it then. Still, it didn't hurt to throw in my two cents. =]
