I am slightly guilty of #2:
"Don’t try to write like your idols."

But I think it has to do with inspiration. When I read a work by someone I like, I am inspired to write. And when I write right after reading a work by someone I like, I subconsciously emulate it.

I don't think this is totally bad, but I do agree with and support what the author of this article is saying.

I've picked up the most valuable lessons from three authors in particular (CJ Cherryh, Jack Vance, L.M. Bujold) but I don't try to "write like" any of them, because if I do, I sound like an idiot. Well, at least to myself. [Smile]
