Again it has been a while since anybody has reported.

As to what is writing, it can be absolutely anything. Of course, anything new, editing, research, blog posts, BBS posts, even E-mail can be writing if they are wordy and pertain to writing or story. Basically, if you can come up with a reason to call it writing, it is. Even coming up with imaginative excuses for not writing might do as well for writing, if it is wordy enough...

I wrote some notes on a non-fiction piece but that is all I have had time to do. Some stuff that I did not have before the last couple months, has eaten what little time I had to write. I don't even have time to read several books I promised to read and have turned down reading about half a dozen other books because I have no time to read them. There is no time to write, right now.

My book FINDING WAXY by PRO-SE' press, is now at Amazon.com. Myself, Roger Stegman and Nancy Hanson are listed as the authors of the book.
Last month, I could not spell published author. Now I is one.

I have about six writing projects waiting for me. Other than some minor dabbling on them last month, everything is on hold until I can free up some time somewhere.

I have started making my wooden Christmas Ornaments. I have some examples made of mice, mittens, and socks. I don't like the mittens or socks, but they are something until I come up with something better.

I have finished another scarf, and will not make any more scarves this year. I started making dish cloths. These will be gifts for the women around me. Being a woodworker, I make my own hooks for crochet. I made a set out of toothbrushes and trying to figure out what design I like best. Many of my crochet hooks end up being gifts also. These are best for sitting in waiting rooms. If I am called on quickly, I don't care, if I am called early, I don't care, and at the end of the day I have something to show for my time.

So the question of the day is

DID YOU WRITE?

Sorry, I did not write...

Yes, I did. The first draft of Beyond the Prophecy is going slowly, but it is going. [Smile]

Also, a couple of crits and two blog posts.

Was planning on posting something like "Did you write last summer?" but now I'll just talk here.

I had a pretty good couple of months stretching back to May...I finished one short story, then another even shorter story, then a longer short story. Submitted the first two to market (already have some rejections on hand), but held up the last one 'cause I want to make some changes to the ending.

All this while I started and worked on what seemed like another one of those interminable attempts at a novel, plotless, making it up as I go along. But it's stretched to almost forty thousand words, and I have a pretty clear idea of how it will end in about another ten thousand words or so.

It'll problably wind up a little short for a modern-day published novel---I've been thinking about self-publishing it once revisions and research are complete---and it's not SF or fantasy, though it has a somewhat fantastic back story. But I like it---so far---and since I'm practically writing for myself I should at least please myself.

But long about early August, the momentum seemed to desert me---a busy life, it seemed, along with a couple of unexpected complications that drained my energy. Like I said, I have a clear idea of what I want to do and how I want to finish both unfinished stories---and, with a three-week vacation coming up in October, I hope to regain some momentum...

Lots of editing. My proofs came back for a trilogy and I've been going through those. I found that I e-published the wrong version and the right version is lost. [Eek!]

My goal has been at least 10 manuscript pages a day, or if I'm in the revision process at least 20 pages a day. It's been pretty brutal, and I've taken a few days off, but last week I put my second YA novel of The Protectorate series, Withered Sea, up on Amazon. Its free promotion deal expired on Sunday with modest results.

Since then I've done 43 pages on my new book, Veiled Trove, Book 1 of the Legacy of the Deep Gnomes series, working with a bit of material I already had written. I am continuing my resolve of completing at least 10 pages a day.

I've also been exploring ways to promote my books and prepare explosions of promoting activity for when a free promotion is available for them. This is definitely my weak side so it's been a learning process, especially with working myself up to just mentioning a free book is available in the appropriate public spaces. Writers have to really go the extra mile promoting themselves because usually nobody else will, and that really isn't in my nature.

So yes, I wrote. Boy did I ever.

Yes; drafts, sketches, block-outs, outlines, plans, revisions, edits, rewrites, struggles, epiphanies: I wrote.

I thought something was missing and this was it.

Yep I did. Even though my writing has been cut down, my laptop is acting strange, probably the hard drive and with working on Saturday I have less time to write.

Not only last week but a while before that. One two WIPs novels that seem to keep getting delayed. On a new one that might be part steampunk, part dragonpunk and sort of UF. Takes place just as we enter into WWI.

Did a story for WotF Q4 which I am revising after someone was kind enough to do a critique of it.

Various new Rod tales. I also revised some and put them on my blog--now seven tales with the longest being 794 words. I seem to have some fans for that series of mini and longer stories.

I also wrote a SF story that's a slice of life scene. I need to find a better conflict and how the MC changes.

Today I started a story-novel about a steam powered war wagon.

Various notes here and on the WotF forum, more on Goggle+ and on my blog Blog

Apart from offering gratuitous advice on Hatrack I have been thinking about writing but not one jot or tittle has poured forth from my quill. From time to time I need to fight off nuro-chemical orcs that insist on trying to lure me away from writing by dangling before my greedy little eyes enticing diversions.

Drat! Blast and bah humbug!

Phil.

Yeah. 1500 words on Raise the Shadow, but set that aside because I wasn't really feeling it and noticed an anthology I wanted to have a go at. So started Between the Worlds and up to 4000 words in that. Hoping to have it finished for the weekend.

Few crits, too.

My best wishes for success for everyone's projects and publications. Mazel tov to you all!

I'm in a career transition phase, perhaps an end-game, so I've been a bit distracted.

The elation of being a Q1 WOTF Finalist two years in a row! (thank you) was followed by the inevitable despondency of losing two years in a row! (commiserations are welcome); and the wounds were salted by these supposed "professional quality" stories being rejected everywhere they've been sent. [Frown]

Bummed, I've transitioned back to longer lengths, completing the first third of a new novel (not Jewish) and a novella (Jewish), the latter set in a world of and written with the talented and esteemed Nick Tchan (we're hoping the new Tor Imprint will favor it--a long shot). Together, these tales have a word count of 60K, which is a good output for me for a year.

LD might like to know that one of my Kabbalist stories (not the novel) may finally see print in 2015, and possibly make the cover of a new semipro market (everyone please think happy thoughts).

I go part-time in 15 days. And in 4 months...well, we'll see. What will Dr. Bob do with so much more time, at last, to write...?*

Respectfully,
Dr. Bob

*(after I finish all the household things my wife has been waiting for me to do the last few decades) [Wink]

Nice to hear about you...thoughts of you have popped into my head lately. I hope your career change and household things doesn't mean you are leaving us.

And the magazine you r reference for your work. Is that the new UF magazine I've heard about? I forget the name at the moment so you might not be able to say either way but there is a new one about to start or has. I need to send them something but I just can't remember to send out everything I need to. Ugh. Next to go out is my revised Q3 tale. Not UF though, but something sort of close, maybe. [Wink]

Hi, LD.

No. I'm not leaving, although admittedly I'm more of a ghost here, reading posts rather than contributing.

I've written fewer but much longer stories this past year, and I don't find critique of the permitted 13 lines helpful for longer works. It's very good for for shorts, though. In my humble opinion, both better serve as vehicles to attract beta readers and, from them over time, build a select coterie who are the most helpful in their critiques. This has been a boon for me and one for which I am very grateful to the Hatrack community.

My transition to a part time and possibly soon retired physician should increase my time for writing. And for worrying. After 30 years a-doctoring, letting go of what my own physician calls the "Golden Manacles" is tough. Living a certain way for so long, repeating a certain routine day-in day-out...well, it molds you psychologically and emotionally. Giving it up, well...

But then I recall the opening of the first Conan movie, with Arnold chained to a horizontal post (of a well, I believe). He pushed it, walking around and around in a circular ditch three or four feet deep. You get the idea. Change, and freedom, can be good. [Wink]

The transition is tough, I admit, but I suspect I will be just fine. I'll shake off the chains and be free to pursue my life-long dream to write something that others will find worth reading.

My best wishes on your new stories, and your new collections that I see you are self-pubbing. Good for you.

I'm uncertain what new UF market you are speaking of, however. I don't think it is the market I may appear in next year--if the tentative acceptance is finalized. I'll be sure to share it here if it is.

Respectfully,
Dr. Bob
