Did you learn something during this week?

Here is a list of things that you can do each week as we work on our novels (suggestions welcomed).

Writing on a novel
Characterization
World Building
Relevant research

As for me:

Last Week's Goals:

DUAL MAGICS SERIES: As time permits, go through the x-ray listings for the Dual Magics boxed set and THE BARD'S GIFT. This is here to remind me that eventually I need to get back to this.
[Razz]

BECOME: TO CATCH THE LIGHTNING/BECOME: TO RIDE THE STORM:
Promote through social media. I now have two books on social media marketing. So . . . I need to schedule some time to read them.
Nope. [Frown]

MAGE STORM: Continue the rewrite. Try to build up some momentum.
Still working on it. [Smile]

OTHER: Update my blog twice a week.
Yes. [Smile]

Next Week's Goals:

I know I was going to post something on world building for Sunshine this week but another blast of freezing air from the Antarctic has arrived. After 7 hours out in the weather and gale force winds, all I want to do is eat a lot of hot food then curl up in my doona and go to sleep.

Maybe next week.

Phil.

I thought I might take this opportunity to talk about the sort of character Susan (aka Trouble) is; or rather, isn’t. She is not some junior Xena, Warrior Princess. Rather, she is your average 14yo girl who just happens to have an uncle who thinks everyone should know how to protect themselves. So, he gave her some unarmed combat training suitable for a 12yo girl. It’s all about avoiding grappling and holding. And about escaping from such holds if caught. The most important thing she learned was how to enter the state of mushin no shin. I don’t know how well I can describe this. First, you loose all fear. Second, you see your opponent as a single gestalt: in this state you can see all of the parts which make up the whole as one, if he alters his balance, moves his weight one way or the other, changes his eye-line, tenses one muscle or a particular group and a host of other discrete changes too minute to notice; but you do. With this knowledge you know what your opponent is going to do as he does and you can move to counter or avoid before he can act. It’s not about hitting, it’s about avoiding and using your opponents strength and momentum against them.

All this means Susan needs a fighting technique which doesn’t kill but is highly effective in rendering her opponents hors de combat. Hence her ‘poise and grace’; In developing this fighting style I intend it to look like a dance, of sorts. But this takes concentration, time and warm air. Oh, god! Give me warm air.

Phil.

It might just be my imagination but I'm certain I've heard of a number of dances based on particular fighting styles.

Anyone else heard anything like this?
