This is for a thread in Open Discussions.

Invasion, ABC, 2005-2006. Story is unfinished.

When Hurricane Eve hits Homestead, FL, and the Everglades in 2005, little ROSE sees orange lights falling from the sky. Her step-uncle DAVE finds that these orange lights are living in the water, and they grab you, kill you, take your DNA and form a copy of you. (It almost happened to him. The resultant copy was ill and poorly formed.)

Family relationships, because they matter:

RUSSELL, head ranger of Everglades National Park
ROSE, his little girl
JESS, his teenage boy
LARKIN, his new (pregnant) wife, a TV reporter
DAVE, Larkin's unemployed, conspiracy-blogging brother

MURIEL, Russell's ex, mother of Rose and Jess
TOM, Muriel's new husband, sherriff of Homestead
KIRA, Tom's daughter by a previous marriage (her mother is dead)

Muriel was assimilated/replaced the night of the hurricane -- because her husband took her to the water to make it happen. Tom survived a plane crash 10 years back -- or, rather, he died and was replaced by a new Tom. She (the new Muriel) can now breathe underwater; she's fascinated by water and neglectful of her children, which horrifies her. Many of the other "hybrid" people, who meet at FATHER JEFF's "survivors" group, aren't horrified but happy to kick their children and spouses out, and they're more prone to mob violence. Tom, she, and a few others are the only hybrids who seem to care -- but even they are distant, cold, and unpredictable (at least, to us).

Conspiracy-blogger Dave is kidnapped, investigated, and released by HEALY, an ex-CIA agent investigating this event, and trying not to be caught and killed by his former partner ELI. (Healy fails at this.) Eli is working with Sherriff Tom at a camp-for-troubled-hybrids in the Everglades. Tom wants troublemakers out of his community, including CHRISTINA, a young mother who abandoned her baby, murdered her mother-in-law for insisting she take care of it, and...is the first hybrid to have babies. A litter that scurried into the water. Muriel has a new ovary-thing too. Pregnancy lasts about 3 weeks. We don't yet know if you can survive childbirth; Christina was murdered by Eli for leaving the camp.

The sea-things won't take you if you're sick, so KIRA's attempt to be more like her dad (by going for a swim) fails. Deputy LEWIS, who lost his arm in Iraq, is replaced, and the new version has his arm back. Tom convinces him to get rid of it (with a chainsaw!), so that people won't descend on Homestead to investigate. Father Jeff shoots Tom for talking God stuff to Lewis, insincerely, to get him to cut his arm off. Tom heals from his wound (quickly, like any hybrid), and Father Jeff then has to go to the Everglades camp. He's probably since been murdered by Eli, for talking to Russell and Dave, who find the island, but are unable to shut it down. The people in the park system and in the Coast Guard who might stop it...they're hybrids too.

The Air Force knows, but isn't doing anything, but they aren't hybrids. They're interested in the new abilities of the hybrids, but not in containing it...

...until next year's hurricane hits. By now the sherriff is losing control of a mostly-hybrid Homestead, who see him as too friendly to the humans, and his deputies won't follow his orders (except Lewis). The camp-for-troubled-hybrids people, equipped with guns and bogus National Guard uniforms, use big trucks to rescue non-hybrids from the hurricane and take them to a shelter -- so they can push them in the water and have them replaced. This includes Russell's family. Russell and Tom try to intervene; Dave convinces Tom's contact at the Air Force to descend on the place and save, well, many of the people. Eli is killed.

There's a girl at UF, replaced when visiting Granny in Homestead, who's killed 3 of her sorority sisters. So: it's out.

Dave, picking up his step-niece Rose at school, meets a terminally ill teacher (lymphoma) and finds a mutual attraction.

Toward the end, Jess, usually mild but sick of mistreatment at the high school by hybrids, is ready to start shooting. What he does is rescue hybridized Deputy Lewis from humans -- the same humans who decide to target Tom in his home. One is convinced by Jess and others to give up the idea, but the other fires a stray bullet that hits Russell's wife Larkin. She'll almost certainly die, Tom thinks -- so he takes her to the beach and throws her in. The last scene is him crying, unable to tell Russell, "I just made your wife one of us."
