You don't post the whole story because then it is considered published and is very difficult to find a home for.

What you should do is post the first thirteen lines in the Fragments and Feedback for Short Stories section. In your post let people know that you're looking for readers and you can e-mail your story directly to someone who volunteers. It is best to do it as an attachment in .rtf format.

Check out this link and look at the Please Read Here First section.

Good luck!

You can join critters...

...a good place for writers to get their feet wet. They do have a policy of a mandatory 'critique to get critiqued' but it is an excellent way to learn how to review and write at the same time.

A lot of people on here used to/ still do/ belong to critters. If you want an unbaised opinion of your story, that is the place to check out.

Back in the days when I was writing fanfic, I saw that FanFictionNet had a space for original stuff---but, when I went looking for it after seeing this post, I couldn't find it. It may still be there, or maybe they just gave it up.

A while ago, I started up my own website and stuck three stories on it. One motivation here was that I wanted to have some work up where people could see it, that wasn't fan fiction. I wasn't worried about selling it somewhere at that point, the stuff having been rejected by all the markets I wanted to consider. I bear all expenses for this, which are not large by my current standards.

(I have two other stories, the whole of my 2009 finished output, that I plan to put up sometime after the last of them comes back from the last market I sent it to, unless I find another market by then.)
