HP (snapper-laptop) Pavilion (3/01/09 - 3/07/12)
HP laptop died suddenly, blacking out without warning. After several attempts to revive it, laptop was declared brain dead.
Laptop gave birth to many works of art (or something that is a close facsimile of art), several of which becoming immortalized in the publishing world. Laptop outlived two powercords and its mousekey pad. A faulty disk drive and inferior speaker system never inhibited laptops true talents as a glorified typewriter and champion web surfer.
Laptop is survived by its lifepartner Snapper, a cooling mat, wireless mouse, and an obsolete blackberry phone.

My condolences but at least it was immortalized by those stories.. so you will always have the memories and something to remind you of said memories.
Someday you shall see each other again in the great virtual eworld.

Reading your post suddenly made me realize ... I must be *Dr. Frankenstein*.
If this happened to one of my pet chimeras, I'd just pop another brain into it, and since I'm a cheapskate it'd be a *used* one.

Everything's been replaced on my computer but the tower and its innards...and that's coming soon.
I feel kinda that way about my first typewriter, a Smith Corona Galaxie portable...but I still use it from time to time. (I've got six of 'em, most picked up in my Goodwill-scavenging period for about five to twenty dollars each. Wish I could pick up a reliable computer for that much...)

Belatedly wondered if there were any stories on your laptop. (Won't somebody think of the children?) If so...my condolences...

A miracle happened today! My laptop had one use left, phone charger. I left it on, mostly to charge the phone, and after four or five hours it came to life! I immediately backed up everything important. I need a new laptop still but, so far, the machine is still working.

I highly suggest you look into an ASUS for your next laptop. I've had mine for maybe 5 or 6 weeks now, and it's got Dell beat all to hollow. My cousin was on an HP and switched to an ASUS. She and I are both totally sold on them.
Sorry about your old HP. My condolences on your loss... er, future loss?

Ugh, I had a similar experience with HP, never buying one again. I had one of those heavy-duty multimedia/gaming ones that cost $2k at the time, and about a month after the warranty expired, so did my laptop. I'll NEVER buy HP again.
I replaced it with an ASUS, and while I love them too, that laptop also died after about three years. I've built many desktop computers with ASUS motherboards, though, and they are still a solid choice.
This time around, I bought an Alienware, the laptop of choice for the discerning science fiction writer! The coolest part? I've got my pen name in both English and the 'alienware' alien language stamped on an identity plate on the bottom of the laptop. Though Dell bought the company years ago, they still retain the boutique quality feel.

Been there, done that, with about everything but a computer...up to and including cars...I figure if I get two to three years out of an electronic gizmo, I've gotten my money's worth out of it.
My two HP towers have lasted...the only reason I abandoned the first for the second was that it kept getting slower and slower, something that's happening with this one...
(A previous reply vanished in cyberspace---other problems.)

Utahute72 if you mean the idea of Abby's brain. It has been done, at least in movie form.
Robert, there is suppose to be software that helps clean out old files, spyware etc that slows down computers.
Probably not this weekend but we will be getting a new computer soon. I have one that is one unit, and the monitor is doing something strange. It's hard to describe but it's almost like it turns off for half a second, everything frizzes then comes back up. We took it in once and they thought it was a software problem. The techs did something to it which helped for a while but now it's doing it more and more, sometimes lasting longer then a second.

LD, that definitely does not sound like a software problem to me. The only time I've seen a software cause the monitor to turn off and on again is when you are updating video drivers.
Is this a laptop or a desktop computer?

So the stuff I use to declutter says...but there's more to it than that. In the, oh, fourteen years I've been going online, things change, new programming comes about, games or videos or songs or manuscripts or whatnots get put on your computer, updates and downloads get processed, the drives get cluttered with things you just don't want to get rid of...and things get slower to the point where it's better just to abandon it and move on.
Your problem with the monitor could just mean the monitor is shot---I've had that happen, too.
