Hi I'm Hans. I do industrial design, and for a break between my regular degree and an advanced one I'm goofing off by studying web design and dating my girlfriend Brita who does figure art. Web design is pretty bad or good or immature; it is for me like being born in 1919 in Germany when the school of building (Bauhaus) got started. The state of web design for me is like an orchard of ripened apples. I'm saying there is room for improvement and innovation. I'm a fan of Bauhaus design, but mostly I'm a fan of Brita. I tell her she has an easier job because the forms she draw follow their functions, and she says my job is easier because a nice couch is more useful than a hot painting of a nude. My goals for the break are to kiss Brita and to host a Bauhaus inspired web forum design contest.

what stands in the way of your goals?

What is the most boring part about your work?

What would you do to improve the state of web design?

How old are you?

How old is your girlfriend?

How would you feel if you saw someone kissing Brita before you get the opportunity?

What is your least favorite thing about Brita?

Do you like her art?

I like to think that if the form has reached the ideal in function it is beautiful. (Consider Shaker brooms.)

I can't say Bauhaus design appeals to me that much...caught on largely 'cause it was cheap, and those buildings were considerably less attractive...still, a few examples stand out...also, I've seen some appalling designs that came directly out of their studios, too...

(Last time I remember seeing the name "Brita" was in an online discussion of whether it'd be a good name for a sentient water cooler.)

Here are some answers for Bent Tree, Robert and the Lurkers (no offense Lurkers).

What stands in the way of my goals?
Kissing Brita is hard to do. I don't know her that well yet, so I need to get to know her.

As for the contest I don't want people to read the rules, read the reward and decide its not worth it. It's like asking people to work for free, which isn't that simple.

The most boring part of my work is trying to use the wrong stuff to talk about the right stuff. For example, someone says what they want on paper with words when they ought to draw something. Or say someone wants a 3d design, but you only have paper to draw with. I'm going to start carrying clay around.

How would I improve the state of web design?
Well, I'm not sure I can actually. It may be good enough, it must be or people wouldn't use it when they use it. However just as Gropius noticed a barrier between artists and craftsmen. I also see one between graphic artists or designers and the people who make the web site work. I would like to lessen that barrier as they did with the Bauhaus school. As Gropius I think said he wanted to create a new guild of craftsmen I do too, and I would call them craftsmen instead of artists like he did.

I am 25 years old.

Brita is 26.

If someone were kissing Brita before I got the opportunity I would be enraged and then depressed. I might try to ask Brita about it, but if I didn't get the opportunity soon I'd probably forget about talking to her.

My least favorite thing about Brita is that she's hard to read. I don't really know how to impress her, she laughs when I do things, but I don't know if I'm really getting through to her. It's an odd feature for a girl with humongous beautiful cow eyes.

Do I like Brita's art? Well, it's clear she see's women differently than I do. I wish she would paint and draw more of them. There is a picture of a middle aged irish looking man in front of a fireplace that I thought I didn't really care for, still I can't forget it. So maybe she's good at art.

Brita (pronounced Bree Tuh and Bree Tah) is also sentient, but she tends toward the water heater sort of figure. I sometimes call Brita Lillian to make her seem thinner.

Robert, it's good to hear you already have an opinion about Bauhaus. For sure not everyone likes it, and not everyone likes the layout of craigslist.com. I do though.

Hi Hans,
How carefully do you communicate with Brita?

Are you reserved, making sure that you don't say anything that you (or she) might perceive as wrong?

Do you say anything, regardless of content, to show her your entire self at all times?
A follow-up to the above question: If you say anything, do you do it deliberately to test Brita's boundaries of acceptance or are you just a motormouth?

Since you don't know her that well, you're in the discovery phase of the relationship. Some talk a lot while in this phase, actively seeking information. Others are more quiet, relying on observation to fill in informational gaps. Which are you?

Finally, do you have a secret that you would not want Brita to know about?

When you said, "humongus beautiful cow..." for a moment, I thought you said something other than "eyes." Your attraction to Brita does have a physical component in it, doesn't it?
