The girl was running away from home. From the looks of her, she had been taking care of herself a good six months. At least that was Maggie’s impression, and you get a good feel for those things when you own a truck stop. Kids like that were likely to have more empty spaces than money to fill them. Sure enough, Maggie caught the girl sliding a bag of nuts into her jacket. She thought of just letting the girl go. This kind of stuff just made her mad and she never dealt with it well. She looked at her husband Dell, half buried in an uncooperative pop machine. The store made barely enough to live on and pay the medical bills. They couldn’t afford to lose even a little profit or get tagged as an easy place.
