I probably should have asked this earlier on. How long is the average time before a critique comes back?
Is it customary for the critique-er to send a received notice to the critique-ee?

Most of the crits I've gotten have been within a few days. I've tried to do the same, and if it's just not happening, I've communicated that back to the person who's waiting on me, with apologies.
How long have you been waiting?

Every now and then, one will vanish into the black hole of life. There has been a time or two when I got overzealous and agreed to read several pieces at once, and in the mix, lost track of one of them. I say shrug and move on Or sent a kind note asking if the critique will be coming.

Critiques do vanish into the abyss. In fact, I've become that abyss a couple of times, usually when unforseen business enters my life and I forget. On both ends, I have a standard: After a week, forget it. That is, if a critique has still not come back in a week don't expect it and if you remember after a week that you haven't given a critique don't bother because they've probably already gotten the feedback they needed and made changes and yours won't be particularly helpful any longer. I choose a week because it's long enough. That's how long my critique group has to get back to one another. When I post something on F&F I'm not asking for people who will have time to read next month or next year or a week from Tuesday, I (and I think most everyone else) is really looking for someone who can spare a few minutes in the next few days. (Not necessarily NOW but soon.)
So anyway, that's the way I look at it.

Abloutely. These are voluntary critiques, and 'life happens', so take what you get and politely request a response when you need to.

BUT, critiques getting lost in the abyss doesn't excuse the person who lost them from politely dropping a note to apologize for dropping the ball.
I've had to do that myself once or twice.

You're absolutely right, dakota, and that is something i have been remiss in the couple of times I've had to "drop the ball." On the other hand, I've never received a note of explanation myself. Not saying that's an excuse, but perhaps in the future we should all make a concerted effort to give a word or two of explanation and apology if we won't be able to look at the story after all. I am one of the worse people on these boards. A critique from me can take anything from 3 days to 2 weeks. The best for you is to get a promise from me of when I'll get it back -- that way, I'll have a deadline to pressure myself with.
But when I critique, I think (and hope!) the end-result is worth the wait ^^.
