This is topic And you thought hatrack contests weren't worth the effort in forum Hatrack Writers - Publications & Reviews at Hatrack River Writers Workshop.
The much missed Talespinner used to throw periodic contests when he was an active member. One he threw had a requirement to open with the phrase "The old man trudged up the road". With that phrase I created The Centenarian. After a rewrite, that threw out that phrase and with an added 1000 words, I began to submit it around. After a few encouraging rejections, and more tweaking, it has found a home.
The Centenarian will be in the January issue of Bards and Sages Quarterly. Thanks Pat, where ever you are.

Congrats. I'm a Talespinner Univ. graduate, too. I rewrote the piece into a much longer slipstream SS that ended up in the Butterfly Affects anthology. I'm sure TS would be glad to here from you.
