I haven't gotten to start a topic here for a while (it's been a long drought on acceptances), so I'm happy this morning to share the news that I've managed my first SFWA-qualifying sale. Daily Science Fiction will publish my flash story "30 Pounds of Human Tissue."

Thanks. I would be remiss if I didn't thank Axe. It was his idea that we write flashes every month until we sold professionally. So, thank you. [Smile] You're next!

Indeed, a damn solid story. I can't wait for it to come out!

Since I'm lucky enough to have read it, I already know how many rocket dragons I'm going to give it. [Smile]

They publish flashes? I had no idea. That sounds like something I might want to try eventually.
Congratulations, by the way!

Mayflower,

Generally they publish flash Monday - Thursday with Friday being reserved for short stories.

However, they don't have a word limit. What I mean is, don't feel restricted by 1k.

They do have a limit, 10000 words, but they have published only one novellette sized piece (not counting Lavie Tidar's recent serial).

They really want short works of fiction. The high pay (8 cents a word) is the reason why they receive the most submissions - by a wide margin - according to duotrope, so expect soem very tough competition.

can't wait to read your story Jennifer.

I don't know where I saw it on this forum, but I found a link to flashfictiononline.com, and they pay $50 per story, I think. Depending on the length of the flash, it may be worthwhile to try FFO first.

Posted by JenniferHicks (Member # 8201) on :

FFO has the higher pay up to 625 words. After that, DSF pays more. I submit to both.

(Edited to fix my math.)

Both publications are SFWA qualified, which is all that matters when the difference in pay is pennies either way.

Not trying to be a smart aleck, just really want to know - why does it matter if it's SFWA qualified or not? (Please excuse this question from a newbie writer; all I know about SFWA is that it stands for Science Fiction Writers of America.)

By the way, are there any other online fiction publications that are not science fiction? Just curious.

Actually, it officially stands for Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (a few years back they decided the S was for science fiction and the F was for fantasy).

SFWA qualified means that if you sell to them, it helps you to fulfill membership requirements for SFWA.

Hundreds. Check out Duotrope.

KDW: Thanks. Then I guess it doesn't matter for me, since I'm not a member of SFWA. :)

Meredith: Thanks!

Oh, cool. That's soon [Smile] But still post when it goes up. I'm bad with dates! (even one that is five days after my birthday, four days after my niece's birthday, and 1 day after my brother's wedding anniversary. lol.)

Bump because ... I'm up! It's surreal after weeks, months and years of reading DSF stories that this one is mine. [Smile]

And after weeks, months and years of reading DSF stories, this is the first time I gave one 7 out of 7. [Smile]

Excellent job.

I already said this on G+. But one of the best I've read in awhile. Congrats again.

Just read your story. It was really, really good. Congratulations!

Thank you, everyone. The positive feedback here and elsewhere has made for a great experience. Now I'm more determined than ever to sell to DSF again.

Read it, what was it yesterday? Great story, congrats again.

I would be interested to read it. Where can I reach it?

Posted by JenniferHicks (Member # 8201) on :

Daily Science Fiction posts stories to its website a week after publication; for my story, that's next Monday. You can always subscribe and get a story in your e-mail box every morning. It's free.

Nice!

...but I think it was more than 30 pounds due to a G-force factor of 1.#### ... [Eek!]
