This is just great, I take off for less than nine months and when I come back, everything's gone to hell!

What happened to the section where people could actually put parts of their writing on for others to critique? What happened to the open discussions forum?

Open Discussions was shut down. If you are interested in that sort of thing, there is the "Hatrack Forum" under the "Forums" button on top. If you want to post a story for critique, there is the "Young Writers' Workshop." Just click on "young" instead of the one you did to get here. Everything is still there except for the Young Writers' Open Discussions Forum.
