I am near the end of completing the manuscript for a new book that I've been writing, but I've reached a problem . . . I need to label(?) it with a genre for query letters. The book is set in a modern time period, and it contains no futuristic technology (pretty much ruling out sci-fi). There are fantasy-esque races (i.e. fairies) but the scheme is mainly people vs. demons. The story follows an almost fantasy motif - a young boy destined to blah blah blah. To complicate things even further, much of it is very action/adventure (i.e. Tom Clancy) and it has VERY strong horror leanings. I am reluctant to label it fantasy, though I love how fanatical fantasy fans can be (I am one myself). In my best guess it, it is an epic cross between "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Lord of the Rings" with a little bit of "Hellraiser" in there (by the way, I don't claim it's anywhere close to as good as any of these . . . except maybe Buffy*.*) I have thought of labeling it Gothic Fantasy, Dark Fantasy, Fantasy, Horror, Gothic Adventure, Adventure/Gothic Fantasy, etc. . . I know I've ran on a little long, but does anyone have any ideas?

For the purposes of a query letter, I suggest calling it modern fantasy (modern refers to a fantasy setting in present day) and letting the publisher decide if any further classification is necessary. The truth is, if the book is published it will go on the scifi/fantasy shelf, since what you've described clearly falls under that general grouping.
Just have a clear, concise summary of the novel to go along with your query and I don't think the publisher will care if you call it any of the things you listed, or modern fantasy as I suggested.

I'd say Modern Fantasy would work from what you describe. Also "dark urban fantasy" would cover it. Good luck!
