Do you know anyone who has access to an AD&D Monster Manual? It has just about all you would like to know about their abilities, description, environment, etc...
It is the best reference I know of for stuff like that. I would suggest going to the bookstore and looking at one off the shelf(if you don't want to purchase it) and take some notes. I have had my D&D books for a very long time(most are first editions). I use them as reference material all the time. They have all new and improved versions now, not a bad purchase for reference if you are going to write Fantasy. IMO

Or, you could try the Open Source Rules for D&D:

If you get prompted for a user name and password, just click cancel.
