Everytime i sit down and try to write something i start off good, but then i get a thousand ideas at once and start to rush my stories without realizing it. before i know it i've got myself in a corner and i dont know where to go from there. is this just from not planning out my characters and settings well enough and/or is this a common problem among first time writers? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Yes it is a common problem. I know for me, it's hard to make an outline, it kinda kills the flow for me. Instead, I take a few of those first ideas and follow them only as I write. I keep a pad of paper nearby and if other ideas come to me as I write, I jot them down. If I want to use them later, I'll still have them It's good to be excited about your story! Meenie

I recommend plotting the story out (in your head) before writing anything. Then I don't get a feeling of, oh, darn, I have to go back and throw out all that I've written . . . maybe I coudl just tweak it a little . . . etc. I don't know if this works for others.
