06-18-07 Did You Write?

As to the proverbial question as to writing, is Yes. Not much, but yes.

Of course I am still writing my story ideas and am holding at two ideas ahead for the month. One of my ideas was five pages long, while two pages is normal. That was a fun one to write and it refused to let me stop. There are other story ideas that I am wishing it would end as soon as possible. I know which are boring to me, and which look difficult to write, but when I start writing, I never know which will end up being good or which will be just filler.

When it comes to writing, EDITING IS WRITING. Most of us prefer to count fresh creations rather than re-hashing. My story ideas give me daily fresh creations. My other writing do require editing, even if it is in the future.

I am editing a Waxy story written by my Writing partner Nancy. This is the 13th story based on a five day vacation we had with her husband. It is written from the point of view of baby dragons we write about. I got about a quarter through it when I ran out of time and have not touched it since.
I also have not touched the New waxy dragon story I started. I will work on that later. Editing takes precedence right now.

I made a three legged stool this weekend. I made the parts last weekend and put it together this weekend. I am better able to write about something than do it. It dawned on me a year or so ago, that I had never assembled anything. I saw a plan in a magazine, so I decided to try it. I made all sorts of errors based on the plan and based on my vision of the stool. Once I had it assembled and sanded, it actually looks pretty good. The rings of the Yellow pine really stand out after I gave it a coat of varnish. I will put on two more coats of varnish to really bring out the paint, then someone else can give it a coat of flat white housepaint.....
This is one more step in having knowledge of what I am writing about. I now can give a good description of someone messing up a project, and can even have it come out looking good. I also now have a bit of knowledge where I can write a description of actually assembling something, if that is needed for a story.

So, the question comes up,
DID YOU WRITE?

I did, and am. I'm just popping in during a break from writing (and work). I find that when I do, returning to writing is smoother. I read everyone alse's stuff, and it takes my mind off of my own. That way it's fresh when I return to it.

I'm writing biographies on my characters. While I thought of my plot, I let my characters become "action figures" acting out the fantasy story. Now, as I've begun writing, I feel that its time to really take a deep look at my major characters and evaluate them.

I have:
-Swayne: a geek made fun of by his peers. He is shy, but wants nothing more than to prove himself. He believes the only person to ever treat him kindly is his sister.
-Yi Min: a very impersonal bounty hunter. His interest is clearly in his job, and nothing else. He has no memory of his past. He becomes close with Swayne during the adventure.
-Kirkan: a cocky jokester. He has a good heart, but will laugh at another's expense. He cares far more about himself than anybody else. He idolizes his brother (who has gone missing) though.
-Damien: A man of convictions. He is powerful in every sense of the word. He believes in fighting for good (his idea of good, anyway) and is willing to commit countless evils to achieve the good. He has no alliegances to anybody except his best friend Avak, Kirkan's missing brother.
-Melody: Kirkan's love interest. She is very strong willed and somewhat sarcastic. Unlike Kirkan, though, she will look out for others as much as she can. An analogy to this would be, if Kirkan were Han Solo, Melody would be Leia.

Those are most of the major characters in the trilogy. The more I'm fleshing them out, the more interesting they become. I have a lot of hope and optimism for them.

Sounds like everyone's doing well :)

I wrote about 1,000 words, but that's still about 3,000 behind where I wanted to be at this point. I think maybe I'll have another bash at it right now.

I wrote on the 18th, very productive day for me. I started off with my WIP at about 6500 words, now it's currently sitting at 11200 words. I believe I fell asleep before I finished what I wanted to write...

I did a little work on about three stories...but the main thing I did, just yesterday, was decide that I'd had enough of fiddling with my twenty-thousand-word novelette. I printed it up, preliminary to sending it out to market. I'm hopeful, but I always am---at least about these things after I finish with them.

Meanwhile I plan to move (a) on to the abovementioned three stories, and (b) back to my novel. (I left my heroine in a terrible situation.)

10,000 words so far on my NIP (novel in process). I started last week. I've also gotten better at finding and fixing sucky chapters faster.

Snort. You left your heroine in a terrible situation. Hope the cops don't find it.

I know, I know. It's late.

The cops won't find it now that you've snorted it all, heroine fein.
