So I was looking around Craig's List for some writing jobs and I find this:

http://denver.craigslist.org/wri/393684585.html

Now, I guess I'm one to talk if I was desperate enough to look around Craig's List in the first place, but there's just something...sleazy...about asking for manuscripts there, especially finished ones. I keep thinking of what Card wrote in the last chapter of "How to Write Sci-Fi."

So am I right to just pass on by and say "no thanks?"

If in doubt, go to the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America's Writers Beware website and read their guidelines on what to look for and what to watch out for in an agent.

Can someone please explain what Craig's List is, I went to the link and still don't really understand.

Notice on that Craig's List page, the guy gives a website for his "Literary Agency." On that website there is absolutely NO list of previously published works, or otherwise any authors who are represented by this "agency."

Honestly, this sounds not necessarily like a scam, but at the very BEST, like just some guy who woke up and said "hey I wonder if I could be a literary agency" and made a website without any prior experience or publishing/agent/editing connections, which are vital to the process.

No, I would never send a manuscript to this guy, based on the Craig's List and website information provided.

Craig's list is part e-bay, part thrift store, part public restroom wall. It features items and services that can be gotten locally. I've never actually gotten anything off Craig's list.

P.S. But I have looked at it on a couple of occasions, and I know a dirty joke that featured Craig's List personals.

Craig's List sounds faintly disreputable to me. Don't they sell body parts, black market babies and everything on there?

The link now goes to something that says "this posting has been flagged for removal." So I guess somebody there thought it was seedy, too. I'd be inclined to think so.
