For a long time, I've had what I will call "Beginning-itis" or "Obsessive Compulsive Perfectionistic Tendencies" when it comes to my writing. Which has made it hard to finish anything, even when I tried outlining the story. ("This outline is stupid.") Anyway, I am happy to tell everyone that I actually finished a story today. And finished it in a way that I was happy about it, instead of biting my nails.

My secret?

Humor.

I decided that I was taking everything too seriously, and decided to try and make something funny. Maybe my story didn't turn out that humorous, maybe it did, I'm going to set it aside for a while so I can come back to the second draft with fresh eyes (my patience will probably only last about a day.)

But I was wondering if any one else found that humor helped them get through writing a bood, and if they had any experiences to share.

I would bet, base don what you said, that your story is probably, actually quite funny. The reason I say this is because, I've found, most stories who try too hgard to be funny aren't, and those who succeed are stories where the narrator is light-hearted but the story is still taken seriously enough.

I like funny stories, but haven't used much in the way of humor in my own stories outside of Internet Fan Fiction. Still, I try to keep some of the dialog light-hearted even when the situation isn't.

Heck, humor is how I survive life, not just my writing.

I find humor excruciatingly difficult in writing. I'm pretty darn funny in conversation, but written humor is totally beyond me. I have no idea how to write something funny when I can't control the timing or the delivery or use expressions or voices or anything like that.

Those of you who can make your writing funny, I salute you.
