So I picked up a copy of Heinlein's ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’ and figured; I'd better read this thing before someone accuses me of being illiterate. So guess what the opening line is… Once upon a time!

I almost dropped it.

I think I’m gonna use that in my next Sci-Fi story. Once upon a time there lived three spaceships…

A lot of aspects of the book were designed to dispel preconceived notions. Yes, the whole aspect of different values, but even something as simple as Heinlein's comment that (paraphrased), "You never see a story about a Martian named Smith".
