Maybe no WotF winners have checked in...

I was going to make a hall of fame for people simply for entering the contest, so everyone's name should be on here.

Okay, okay.

Q1 2008 7000 words Honorable mention

Q2 2008 7500 words Not winner

Q4 2008 5000 words Grand Prize winner. Really it will be. Talespinner has assured me that his Ansible has never steered him wrong.

Blast! Foiled again. I was guaranteed by a fortune cookie and a message in my cheerios that I would be the 2008 winner. Were it not for these heavenly signs I would never have entered at all.

Well I thought it was a good idea. :P

Don't be depressed about it. I didn't get much reaction a while back when I put up a "how much did you get for that story?" post...

Maybe we should start some kind of club.

I'm not in the habit of checking this forum as regularly. That's my excuse.

Umm....let's see, I have one HM at least...I've lost track of which story I entered when. Going to approximate:

KayTi's WOTF entries:

3Q2007 - HM (5k words)
4Q2007 - nada
1Q2008 - nada
3Q2008 - presumed nada, but haven't gotten MS back yet with fancy reject thank you for playing letter. Still holding out hope that somehow mine got misclassified and is *actually* the missing finalist...

I think that covers it. Still bummed my Mr. Nobody story didn't even get an HM. Gotta get that bad boy out to market.

I suspect either ChrisOwens or luapc will have the lead in points, for entries alone.

Kathleen was published.

Silver3 was published in WotF Vol. XXIII

Eric James Stone was published in WotF Vol. XXI and as a finalist he was published in WotF Vol. XX

Sweet! I win by not winning!

My non-winning stories were 4k and 6k respectively. My submission last time was 5k (I'm totally guessing here but I basically write a 4-8k short story, it's just the distance I'm programmed to run apparently.)

Meanwhile, since I posted last, I now have a new story submitted to 4Q2008 at 6k words. Woo hoo!

Q206 Quarterfinalist/Honorable mention
Q107 Semifinalist
Q207 Honorable mention
Q407 Finalist
Q108 Honorable mention
Q308 <Splat!>

Edited to add: According to Zero's scoring, 28.

Here's my Results. Sorry, I can't remember the exact quarter of the rejects and HM's (quarter finalists) except the Semifinalist.

6 entries before 1997 - all Rejects

No entries until 2005

Since 1st Quarter 2005:

1 Semifinalist 1st Quarter 2006
9 Honorable Mentions (quarter finalists)
4 Rejects

1 pending in current quarter

I've had one Honorable Mention and one Nicy Try. As everyone seems to have a different system of what "quarters" and "years" mean for WOTF, I've no idea what they count as.

I had a trawl back through and couldn't find any such post, Robert - can you track it down and revive it, or start again?

It's always intrigued me how few people actually say anything at all about money in relation to writing. Given that many of us here - most, presumably - would like to earn money through our writing, the reluctance to discuss any actual financial issue does seem a touch odd.

I entered the 2nd quarter of 2008 and got a 'thanks, but no thanks'. It was a 2500 word story, fantasy. I think I shot myself in the foot with it as it had a POV in 1st, and a different one in 3rd.

I have entered Q4 2008, but have heard nothing except that they have recieved my entry.

That's my total WOTF history.

I don't know ... perhaps it was the lack of dates and a little clarity. Published what? Finalist? Winner? What?

Questions of that nature.

tchernabyelo, to answer the question of what counts as a year and what counts as a quarter:

The WotF year runs from October 1st of one year to September 30th of the next. Q1 is october 1st through december 31st inclusive and so on.

If you sent something today, it would be for Q1 2009.

Posted by tchernabyelo (Member # 2651) on :

That was my understanding, but I see lots of people talking about the current period as being Q4 2008...

I sent both my entires in June (one in 07, one in 08) so by the WOTF reckoning I believe that's Q3 2007 (HM, for a story that sold at pro rate to the next market it went to) and Q3 2008 (not even an HM, for a story that hasn't sold yet).

And yes, I'm guessing that tchern=tchernabyelo. Some people seem to have trouble with my nickname, I can't imagine why!

Oh, ETA - is luapc on 74? I make 10 rejects = 20, 9 HMs = 36, and one Semifinalist = 8, which sums to 64. Still a phenomenal record, though.

That's the quarter system followed by the staff of Galaxy Press, who run the WotF contest. Yes, June is Q3

Aw, shucks.

Regarding which quarter is when, the easiest way to remember is that they READ the 1st quarter during the real 1st quarter, so you are submitting for the 1st quarter during the real 4th quarter.

You are always one ahead.

Posted by Spaceman (Member # 9240) on :

Oh, and regarding quarter finalist. They changed the name from quarter finalist to honorable mention maybe two years ago. Too many people got confused between "quarter finalist" and "Finalist for the quarter." Thus, renamed to Honorable Mention. It's the same thing.

Chris, congratulations!

I didn't know we keep score. I found out last week that in my first ever submission to the contest, I got an honorable mention. Yeah! I was bouncing off the walls. I wasn't going to submit this quarter, but now I'm frantically trying to finish a revise and get the story in the mail.

Hey, just found this thread. I've got WOTF pride - three nice tries floating around somewhere.

I can't remember exactly which quarter they were submitted (this is the problem with having two homes... your rejection slips are never around when you need them!) but I'm pretty sure they were 2004, 2005, 2007.
