Where is the best place to download books or short stories to my iPhone (which acts the same as an iPod)? I've never done it so I guess I have to go through iTunes. Any experts around?

I use the Stanza book reader. It's an iTunes app I use on my iPhone. It hooks in to a lot of eBook suppliers including Project Gutenberg. I've never used it for short stories, but have for longer pieces. It downloads the book, so it's a lot better than reading from a browser.

I'd probably start there. I read someplace that Amazon may be contemplating selling Kindle-style ebooks that you can read on Stanza.

I second Stanza. It's a free app, and has a lot of free books. Lots of classics, and they cycle through new ones for free quite a bit.

If you just go to the "Books" category under apps and pull up the free list, there are at least half-a-dozen apps you can use. Download them all, they all access different book databases.

Note: just because the app is free doesn't mean the books will be.

For free mp3 audio books and stories I download from librivox which has all public domain material read by amateur volunteers. The quality is uneven but it is free and legal. For fantasy and SF there is podcastle and escape pod. Google any of these names to find the sites.

You can also get the Kindle app for the iphone. The app is free, and amazon does do free downloads occasionally.
