Hey All,

So maybe not the right place to post this, but I just moved to Los Angeles for an internship this summer and was wondering if there were any hatrack writers out here interested in working on our writing some time? Workshop? Meet for coffee and talk? Whatever. I'm a screenwriter myself, so if anyone wants to talk about that, I'd love to.

My e-mail is kristopher.wile@gmail.com if you're interested.

I live in Santa Clarita Valley, which is close by. I'm going to be attending UCLA in the fall as well.

What kind of stuff do you write?

Los Angeles is a big area. The "city" is about 50 square miles. I'm in the South Bay, myself. (That's about as far from Santa Clarita as you can get without leaving the county.) Is Santa Clarita even in LA County? I thought it was Ventura County. Not that my local geography north of about the Getty Museum is reliable.

I'm moving to San Diego sometime in August! How long will you be in the area? We could have a group meeting.

(And yes, I know how far it is from San Diego to LA. Traffic included.)

We're pretty close Ventura, but I just got a jury summons for LA County. =P

@SchamMan 89

That makes it L.A. County. I know they don't mind sending jurors fairly long distances, but I haven't heard that they poach from the neighboring counties--yet.

I hope they at least assigned you to a courthouse in the Valley. Not downtown. That'd be a miserable commute.

@BoredCrow

Actually, it's often easier (although not necessarily quicker) to get to San Diego than across to the far side of L.A., at least from where I am. Rush hour aside, there's only one or two real traffic areas between, say, Long Beach and San Diego. And there are some really neat places about half-way in between.

Of course, San Diego (city and county) is darn near as large as Los Angeles.

Meredith - I'm used to the route through Long Beach (the 405, I believe), because when I visit family I tend to go that way betweeen Mission Viejo and Lakewood.

Sheesh, it's always rush hour in California. (I grew up in San Jose)

Although I am not part of the california scene I do make it out there quite often. If you do start some sort of get together and have, let's say' a once a month meeting, fill me in and I will make plans to crash your party.

Well, as between Santa Clarita and San Diego, I seem to be the closest thing to centrally located, at least so far. I'm in Torrance, about twenty minutes or so further up the 405 from Lakewood (depending on time of day, of course). And just a mile or so from the freeway.

Wait, that would force me to Ack! Ack! Clean House! I've been really bad about that, lately. It's this writing thing. I'll start something and then think of something I just have to write down and there goes the next two hours. Of course, in summertime there're always the patios. The dog hair doesn't tend to stick as much out there.

I'm in Burbank myself actually. Who all would be interested in a monthly workshop? And what kind of workshop?

Posted by SchamMan89 (Member # 5562) on :

I'd be interested, my only issue would be once I get school started in September, I wouldn't be able to guarantee my attendance. However, these summer months are where most of my writing is taking place anyway.

I'd be interested in a meeting... once I arrive. I'd definitely only be able to do once a month, especially if we meet closer to LA.
It'd be much fun though!

I've never been part of a face-to-face group. But I'd be interested.

Did this just die on the vine? Or is everybody too busy with life and writing?

Posted by BoredCrow (Member # 5675) on :

Ha, Meredith, I was thinking of resurrecting it too. But since I'm still in Wyoming, (ONE WEEK LEFT!) I was going to wait until I got there.

But I'm definitely up for it, and for discussing it now. Any meeting date after August 12 would (probably) work for me.

Is anybody else still interested in this? Anybody new interested?

Posted by genevive42 (Member # 8714) on :

Count me in. I'm in Gardena.

Let me know what you come up with.

Posted by Meredith (Member # 8368) on :

Howdy, neighbor. I'm in Torrance.

If enough people are interested, and it's reasonably convenient, we can meet at my house.

That is, as long as nobody minds dogs. The cats will probably absent themselves. But the dogs will expect a share of the attention.

I love animals. There have only been two short periods in my life when I haven't had some sort of furry companion. From the day my mom brought me home from the hospital and for the first twenty-seven years of my life I had a dog around.

I'll be happy to shower your puppies with whatever attention they want.

What are the meetings going to focus on?

To be determined, based on what everybody's interested in doing.

Ideas are welcome.

living in as isolated a spot as Tasmania has ceratin benefits, you know, 9 miles of beaches and yours are the only footprints on it, that sort of thing, but it has it's disadvantages too.

read that as: I wish I had hatrackers nearby and I hope you guys make the most of it...

Anyone else in the area?

Posted by BoredCrow (Member # 5675) on :

I'm still in. I vote for a weekend meeting, because the traffic from San Diego will be only horrific (as opposed to excruciating, as it is during the weekday evenings).

Posted by genevive42 (Member # 8714) on :

Sunday is great for me. I work Saturdays.

Posted by Meredith (Member # 8368) on :

Sundays are fine, generally.

We might have to decide on a location a little further south. Sort of share the pain of that commute. But it's probably easiest to have the first meeting at my house and see where we go from there..

Posted by Meredith (Member # 8368) on :

I should add that I am located in the northeast corner of Torrance and really convenient to the freeway. I don't think the offramp is more than a mile away, driving distance.

Posted by snapper (Member # 7299) on :

I'll be in! As long as you guys are willing to change the location to Fort Collins Colorado....

Posted by BoredCrow (Member # 5675) on :

I have to admit that I'd be grateful for a slightly more southern location for some of the meetings.... But I'm fine going up to Torrance for the first meeting.

Hey, snapper, I wish you were serious about wanting a Hatracker meeting in Fort Collins. BoredCow left me alone in this area.

To you L.A. people, have fun!

Okay. Looks like three of us. Want to set a day to shoot for and then we can switch to e-mail?
