Did you write? August 24, 2009

Edited to correct the date.
I accidentally got the year wrong when coming back from doing a story idea about cavemen... Getting to the right date during time travel is really tough....... <g>

It is that time of week where you are faced with a small but important deadline. Did you write at any time during the past week? This is the place to report your accomplishments, cry about your failures, and otherwise tell about what is going on in your life.
The hope is that you see this note coming up and you get yourself to write something, whether it is something new, an edit, a poem, an article, a blog, a writing assignment, and even world or character creation as long as something gets on paper. The idea is to be involved in writing in some way, preferably productively. This note is to prompt one to write just so you can report you actually write. Of course, life tends to get in the way.

I did write this week. Several sessions of rewriting my Waxy Dragon birth story. I added only two pages and 1661 words, I cut some, but really added content. I am about to the point where the plot changes from the original version of the story. I am swapping scenes around so I can spice up the story and develop the characters and their interactions better.

At the time of this writing, I am one idea behind for the month for this date. I have till next Monday to catch up and unless something goes wrong, It should be quite easy to get caught up on my ideas.

AS to the question of the week,
Yes, I can say I did write.

Did you write?

Yep! Did some revisions on a WIP, rewrote the first couple chapters of a novel in 3rd person (instead of 1st) to see what would happen, and even made the leap into blogging.

Yes I did. About 15,500 on my current WIP. Whee. It's fun when it flows like this!

Aye!

About 20,000 words on my novel. A flash. Polishing a couple of stories in WIP and critting others.

I started a new short story with the intent of working on it at work since it is lighter fare than another piece that I only seem to be able to work on at home. Both are about a third finished. Having two open and active stories bothers me a bit but hopefully I will be resolving that soon. I do mostly know where both of them are going.

I also did two crits for fellow Hatrackers.

I've also done a fair amount of research for some story points.

All in all not oodles of writing. I hope to do more this week.

I did!! I finished the first draft of a short story I have been working on. It's over 14000 words, but I'm working at cutting it down. I'm beginning some story development on another short I've had going for a while. Hopefully I can finish that within the next week or so.
I am also working through a crit for a fellow hatracker.

I can't remember specifically what I was doing August 24 2004. I'll bet that I did write that day, but I can't be sure. I'm just surprised no one else caught on that his date was five years ago.

Yes. Just a few news-type articles for my job. Very little for my story but I should have more time now in this coming week.

Yep. Got started Monday evening and just finished a rough draft of my current story.

Nothing much. One session one day of furious revision on my completed less-than-masterpiece. Hopefully I'll polish that off (and polish it up) in a few weeks, then return to something old or come up with something new.

Hmm. Well, I can change the topic subject to 2009, but I'll let rstegman fix the first post.

I did. I proofed someone's synopsis for their query letter and, never having seen one, assumed it was for juvenile fiction. It was cut right down to the very barest of bones! I don't see what an editor can glean from this! So I worked on my synopsis and it is, like, 26 pages long. Erk. And that is leaving out subplots!

I also re-worked what I am calling my preface but since someone also agreed with my husband that it was too heavy to hit people with to start with, I shortened it drastically and will insert it elsewhere in the story.

It's still preachy but it's preachy from a much more fun character than myself. And much briefer.

AND I reworked my first bit of Red in a way I like better. I am learning a lot from looking at other people's work and thinking about what they are doing. A good week.

Generally, I love writing. But synopses are no fun at all. Not even a little. How many revisions has mine been through? And I'm still sure it could be a lot better. It think my first version was about ten pages--single spaced. Cutting it to two pages and trying to keep any sense of the story was really hard.

I think I've sweated more over the synopsis than I ever did over the book.

My diary for 2004 is inaccessible at the moment---much like everything else in my house, it's under a big pile of heavy and difficult-to-move books. I could get to other years, but not 2004.

If interest in this turn of the topic doesn't die down, I'll take another stab at getting it out.

Sadly no. I was on vacation for a week (in which I didn't go on a computer for 5 days straight!) and then worked a bunch of overtime last week. I will try to get to those crits I promised this week!

Revised. One major scene in my wip for this quarter's WOTF needed a lot of work. Sentences re-ordered. POV re-worked to show the third person in the scene more clearly. It's been a big job.

Yeah, I actually did. Despite a brutal week of 11 hour days, I found the inspiration to write. Not sure if I like it, but a story is in the start that I have, just waiting to come out.

Addendum: I got to thinking about my story this morning at work and decided there's a major flaw in it as currently written. I think I'll work on revising what I've got while thinking of what I can add to correct it. (But I don't really want it any longer than it is.)

Aug 29 -- I'm beginning to believe I can do it -- cut my story down from 29,900 words to under 17,000. I'm now at 21,771 words.

It's being a real teaching time. How much of what I had written was really needed? Less that I thought. A lot less. Of course, I am slaughtering babies right and left, ones I was proud of. And still there are a lot (enough?) of setting and background and beats to make the story understandable.
