Posted by skadder (Member # 6757) on :

Thanks. I can't say the story title--it's anonymous judging--I'd be disqualified.

No, it wasn't. That story has just been sent in (Sept 30 deadline). The story that made the finalist had to be in by June 30th.

Thanks for the congratulations, guys.

Posted by Merlion-Emrys (Member # 7912) on :

Thats nice, dear. :-)

Posted by skadder (Member # 6757) on :

No, this story was for the quarter that had a deadline of June 30th, the results of which are only being posted now. I presume they were delayed by the award ceremony.

I have another story in for the quarter ending September 30th which she hasn't looked at.

Thanks guys.

Of course, I only offer this to relieve your anxiety. I'm sure you don't need the pressure of waiting another month for an answer.

Thanks for congratualtions.

I'll take you up on the lunch offer, Tracy. Frank (snapper) was saying that loads of Hatrackians live in LA (or near) so if the unbelievable happens (I'm not holding my breath) then I may get to meet a few of you.

I feel like I am setting myself up for a fall--thinking about what could happen--but it's almost impossible not to.

double crossing is bad luck on this side of the pond. just so you know.

i'm still ticking, thanks for asking, and still typing away. been working on books, mostly. hopefully will have a short story in the near future.

Hi Skadder,

To those who've done the work, will come the spoils. You've done the work in both the writing and the critiquing, so very well deserved.

I'm not sure whether this qualifies you to go to the workshop or whether you need to go further, but Cat Sparks (much awarded Australian author, 2004 3rd place) told me it was one of the biggest steps in her writing career. Here's hoping.

Regards,

Nick

Big congrats, skadder! And good luck on being that one in eight. And then maybe one in four? Anything is possible.

Anyone know what the deal is on the three different groups of honorable mentions? Originally I figured all non-placing entrants are given honorable mentions, but I notice there are three different release dates for the groups, 9/24, 10/6 and 10/12. I'm in the second group and am wondering if there's any significance to the line-up.

Posted by extrinsic (Member # 8019) on :

The release order of the honorable mentions' honor roll is only the way the results come in, and in alphabetical order.

Wow...thanks for all the congratulations, guys.

@Merlion--not a chance, my narrow view got me this far! The carapace story hasn't really been done yet--it's stalled for the moment.

I'm not a natural blogger, but I will try and do one for the workshop week--either during or I'll take notes and blog it later. I'll see.

I'm not sure how many hatrack winners there have been over time--Aliette de Bodard (silverfox or something) springs to mind. Kathleen may have the stats.

Anyway, two in one go this time--congratulations to Brad!

It's nice to finally get a base hit in this game.

Only took me 870,000 words and 138 rejections and 17 years.

=^)

Thanks, all. Feels mighty, mighty good!

Visit my blog. I've been yammering.

Good luck to everyone who has stories in the Q4 and Q1 piles.

Congrats Brad, you really deserve your win.

I feel a little inadequate next to those statistics!

Some good info on Brad's blog about things to bear in mind if you're serious about winning WOTF.

Yeah--congratulations Brad!

PS nice blog. And your previous HM and Finalists are exciting too. Out of all the stories I read in my first WOTF anthology, the one thing that stands out the most was the author descript saying that she submitted to WOTF every quarter before finally breaking through.

I'm a little late, just saw the news myself! Pretty exciting and inspiring to see you win skadder! Would love to hear what the workshop is like, an even better reward than a cash prize in my opinion. (although I bet the cash prize is pretty exciting too)

Posted by skadder (Member # 6757) on :

Thanks.

Posted by snapper (Member # 7299) on :

There are two things I like to say about this news.

1) I found him first! I am taking full credit for all his success. i've read every piece he sold (hell I practically wrote them). I've talked him off the ledge a couple of times. (who hasn't been there while plying our stuff that gets rejected?) Skadder is my find, in fact I think I'm due a commission or something.

2) Whaaa!! We basically started at the same time. Now he's leaving me in the dust! What's worse is our hundred million dollar bet! First one to a sale target wins. With my last few sales I just about pulled even then this! I haven't lost yet but man am I on the verge of being his indentured servant (as well as all my descendants to his descendants) for eternity!

I have said to more than one person that he is the best undiscovered writter that I have come across for a longtime. Now that he is discovered, I will need to pass that title to someone else.
That story that won is excellent but is probably my fifth favorite on the ones he wrote. In other words, he's done better than all but one persons best in that quarter.

Mark my words, everyone. Adam Colston will be a houshold name in the Sci-Fi world one day. You will see his name on the shelves of the bookstores before he is done.

Congratualtions, Adam.

Couldn't have happened to more talented writer.

HOLY CROW ! Two Hatrackers win in one quarter of the WOTF???? Unreal!

Way to go, Skadder & Brad!!!! You two are an inspiration for the rest of us . Hopefully it won't be long before I'll be stepping up to the plate to take a swing at it .

Hey, sorry I'm late to jump on the congratulatory band wagon. I didn't even find this thread until now.

We need to make it a clean sweep next quarter. Unfortunately we just lost two key players.

Snapper--Due to a long story that's way too convoluted to explain right here, I currently find myself in the market for a new title, and that one might be right up my alley. Let me know--maybe we can work something out.

Nah, plenty more winners on Hatrack.

Although I hear that the contest organisers like to let people who organise contests win..

I ran most of the intro contests on Hatrack and a few flash challenges. Running and entering those contests made me think about my writing in a different way.

Perhaps, if someone were to start the intro competition again...

Whooa...a double post? WTF?

Posted by Kathleen Dalton Woodbury (Member # 59) on :

It may not be that contest organizers like to let contest organizers win so much as it may be that people who organize contests learn how to win them.

Similar to how giving feedback can help you learn to write better than receiving feedback.

Posted by skadder (Member # 6757) on :

No, of course they don't! If only they did--it would be simple.

I was just trying to get someone to do the contests for a while. But I agree, running them affords you a viewpoint over time, which is very useful.

Okay, can someone give me the link so I can find out just what WOTF is? One day I won't be a newbie anymore.

I yearn for the day.

Posted by skadder (Member # 6757) on :

WotF is the the Writers of the Future contest which is probably the best and biggest free contest for aspiring writers of fantasy and science fiction. It runs four times per year.

Stories are blind judged and the three winners receive a cash prize and are professionally published in an anthology. the winners are also flown to LA for a week-long writers workshop and gala award ceremony.

Maybe I should change the title of this topic, so it's clearer.

Posted by Dark Warrior (Member # 8822) on :

Someone earlier asked how many Hatrackers have won WOTF.

I was wondering if we had stats just from this last quarter?

We had 2 winners (Awesome guys), how many HM and finalists?

Posted by skadder (Member # 6757) on :

I know we had another finalist (starweaver) and Chris Owens was a semi-finalist...

Posted by skadder (Member # 6757) on :

We had a hatrack scorecard a year or so ago.

Posted by Dark Warrior (Member # 8822) on :

UPS just dropped off WOTF 24 and 25 and not a single Hatrack shout-out

Posted by skadder (Member # 6757) on :

Do you mean that there were no Hatrackians in either volume?

Posted by Dark Warrior (Member # 8822) on :

If they were, Hatrack wasnt mentioned in the author bios, but there were a lot of Clarion, and local writers groups mentioned.

Posted by ChrisOwens (Member # 1955) on :

Aliette De Bodard frequented Hatrack a number of years ago. She's won WOTF, published in Asimov's, been nominated for awards, and her Aztec fantasy/mystery series is coming out soon.

Posted by Brad R Torgersen (Member # 8211) on :

I don't feel like I am here enough to qualify as an actual Hatracker.

Maybe, Associate Hatracker?

Occasional Hatrack Poster? OHP for short?

Posted by Kathleen Dalton Woodbury (Member # 59) on :

Eh! If you've posted enough for people to remember you, then you count, Brad. (I was almost going to say that if you've posted enough to become a "member," but that only takes 9 posts.)
