I’ve been thinking, since the beginning of the year, about starting a Facebook using my “real” name (I’ve gone by Merlion and/or Emrys for so long and so many people have known me by them I’d no doubt look up should someone say them in a crowded room, but I use my real name for my by line) and also doing a blog.

Facebook doesn't really have a blog function, and Myspace seems to be rather overrun with spam, so any suggestions for blog outlets or networking sites with built in blogs or anything else having to do with such stuff would be appreciated.

The blogs I visit are on Blogger, Blogspot, LiveJournal, Wordpress.com, or Wordpress.org. I prefer working with and visiting Wordpress blogs. There's also Twitter for micro-blogging (posts of 140 characters or fewer).

You can post blog-like items on Facebook in your Notes section. You should find a link to your Notes on your profile page, just a little to the right of your profile photo.

And you can set up your blog to publish to your facebook page (via the Notes section.) My typepad blog does this.

KayTi do you know offhand if Wordpress has that capability? Meredith's blog on there is quite nice so I've been thinking about that seriously.

I need to look at the Notes thing on Facebook more closely, see how I feel about it.

Wordpress does have that capability. I think Facebook Notes can pull from any blog that has an RSS feed.

KayTi, I hope you don't mind that I answered before you.

I have a couple of blogs on LiveJournal.com. They have an easy to understand interface and you can set up a user name using a pseudonym. I like 'em. And unless you want a bunch of bells and whistles, it's free.

Nope. I'm an information free-lover. Share and share away! (My own answer would have been more general, as I believe it can, because I'm pretty sure one of my FB friends uses a wordpress blog and I see her blog posts pushed to FB, but I'd have to check and I'm feeling lazy.)

For what it's worth, it seems like most of the writers whose sites I've checked out lately use Wordpress for their blog. I use blogger for some things i do and it's fine but it's free and I find the configuration settings a little cumbersome, hard to figure out, and limited (though I do have the blog I do for a fundraiser set up in a way that I like the look of.) Wordpress blogs all look REALLY different to me, so I get the feeling that they have a lot of features. I don't know if it's a free service or pay, though (I imagine there's a fee.)

Meredith said its free.

Wordpress.com is free. Not sure about wordpress.org. There are extras you can pay for, but you don't have to.

I've considered blogging, and reconsidered, but so far have decided against it. So far, the occasional note or raw comment, here and elsewhere, serves me just fine.

Robert Nowall is my real name. The only times I've been anonymous have been when I've been careless.

Sweet. Thanks for the info! I'll get around to my author's blog one of these days. Maybe AFTER I finish editing this novel...that's a good idea (something to pass the time while it's in submissions and while still outlining my next thing.)

For facebook, I have two accounts. One is under Tameson Yip, which is my real name and is the name of my writing blog and will be what I submit under (and I am contemplating switching my hatrack name to that). My other is under a different name, which my friends would know me by and most would look for that first anyway. It is a name that I could just as legitimately used for my writing name, but I had to pick one name and so I did (maiden name which I have id under still and nickname which most people think is my actual name). Sadly, my passport is under one name, my driver's license another and my credit cards a third name. My library card is under a fourth, but no one really cares what your library card says.

Well here is my lovely new blog http://justinawilliams.wordpress.com/

And my lovely new facebook is under Justin-a Williams. Not sure how to paste that properly...thanks everybody for your help and suggestions. Now I just have to figure out how to work all this stuff.
