Challenge: write 500-1000 words per day every day.

If you manage hit the target crow about it on this thread. We don't want to know why you didn't hit the target--we just want to know who hits it.

I'll go first:

I wrote 1500 words in the last 24 hours.

Was generally my goal, but as a policy rather than a contest.

Does revision count?

Well, it's been said by many a person that, yes, I am a writing fool. Emphasis on fool.

1500 words last night. 1200 words the night before (but each one sucked and suffered the wrath of the DEL key). About 800 Sunday night (no football game on).

I actually have a widget I coded for my Wordpress page that I can record my word counts in. It's meaningless, as word-count doesn't imply any kind of quality, but it does help me hold myself accountable in that I'm actually writing.

Emphasis on fool.

Time zones are bit out of step here so I'll post what I did yesterday

1200 words yesterday and the same the day before.

I try to average 1000 a day over the week and usually hit it, and often go over. On Sunday I did close to 4k.

Past three days have been 500-750 words. I've discovered a new method to keep myself productive: Every time I sit at the computer I force myself to do 250 words. Doing a little bit at a time seems to be a lot less scary to my nonproductive self.

I write roughly about, on average, 3,000 - 4,000 - 5,000 words a day.

I wrote 3,456 words this morning. And I'm probably going to write more tonight.

I write, on average, 20,000 words a week. Sometimes 30,000 words a week.

I vote we keep this thread going. I plan to post here as much as I can remember, even if I don't make the limit (Though not posting excuses as to why)

It's helpful having people to report to at the end of a day, especially those within the same profession. Thanks for this, Skadder. The weekly one is nice, but a daily one allows me less room to squirm.

Just found this thread. Cool thread. Why? Because I wasnt in the mood to write, and in fact the first 178 words took forever, ok thirty minutes, but man, thought it would never come, but the last 440 took only ten.

610 words for me.

Such lovely timing. I haven't even been on Hatrack once this summer, nor have I written anything(lovely use of the word 'nor' if I do say so myself). So today, I wrote 1,274 words and came back here, where I find a ready made challenge to get me back in the groove. Skadder, you are amazing.

Glad to have you back, unwritten. Glad to see you hitting the target.

Note to all: if you see your story cupboard is bare, i.e. you have nothing plotted to the point you'd like to start writing, then just pick a random character and start him off on some adventure, or put him an a dire circumstance (aboard a sinking ship, tied to the mast!) and see what happens to him. It may develop into a story (you never know) or it may prompt you with an idea for another story. Or take the character and have them interact with someone--make it someone he/she conflicts with somewhat. It may give you a little more depth to the character when you later use them.

Worst case scenario is you hit your 500 word target...

Get writing!

Posted by skadder (Member # 6757) on :

I didn't write for about 9 months...I was doing a university course. I always find that the struggle to get back to my previous skill level usually means I end up better than before. I think that is partly due to the panic i experience that drives me forward.

I have in the past stopped writing for a month or two, while I decide what it is about my writing I want to improve. I then spend time dreaming up lines of prose that somehow incorporate these new ideals...when it feels as though it is starting to come together, I go back to the keyboard and begin typing

edited to say: *My first attempt at a science fiction NOVEL. The narcissistic side of me would like to think that someone, somewhere remembers that I've written a couple of science fiction short stories.

Not sure if you mean every day or just to average it?

Anyway, I keep track of my daily writing habits in an Excel spreadsheet and it gives me fun statistics to help keep me motivated. For the year 2010, I've averaged 745 words per day. I've written 174 of the possible 260 days and when I do write, I average 1113 words during that session. My total publishable word count for the year is 193,748. That number doesn't count editing, queries, cover letters and synopsis.

Just post when you meet the challenge. So if you write 500 words in 24 hours then you can post. It is so you can crow, yet also show people who may not be writing that it is possible to hit the target often (everyday!).

I wrote 2,718 words yesturday of my newest book. I haven't written any of that in awhile because I'd been focused on these short stories. But I got back into it, and I finally discovered, in those 2718 words, an ending. I'm so glad, because I didn't think I'd find one. It helps, like really really helps, when I give myself clues throughout the book. I discovered an easier way, for me at least, to find endings. I give myself clues, and include things within that I might possibly be able to use later on. x] It paid off.

I am envious of all of you.
I'm on call this weekend.
I must have dictated and edited 5-6000 words -- not one of them fiction.

Did start drafting a query letter and a three sentence pitch for my novel.

Summarizing an 108,000 word story in three sentences to hook an agent's interest is a challenge.

Not that there is any comparison, but how did Tolkien do it?

"The long-lost One Ring of Power of the Dark Lord of Middle-Earth has been found Bilbo Baggins, one of the little people, who gifts it to his nephew Frodo.

If the Dark Lord recovers the Ring, and he is seeking it desparately, Middle-Earth will plunge into blackness and horror forever.

With his friends and an elf, a dwarf, two Men of royal lineage, and a wizard, Frodo sets out on a near hopeless quest through ancient mountain caverns, magical elven forests, and the Dark Lord's own kingdom of ash and shadows in hope to destroy the Ring in the fires of the volcano where it was once forged-- before the Ring can overpower him."

Back to editing, more like a major rewrite, as it was the first short story I ever wrote those many years ago. But had finally found the holes I needed to plug. This story had been haunting me for, well since I wrote it, not quite 4 years ago. Man has my writing changed. Literally littered with dialogue tags, roar, growl and POV what was that? But the adrenaline was there, something I have wanted to get back to, writing with feeling, allowing the first draft to be bad.

2100 today and very close to finishing this first draft. I've got the next one outlined and an initial edit done on the last one. Once I've finished this draft though I want to do a couple of shorts before I start the next novel WIP. I've also got the query and synopsis do for the last one and good bit of trimming to do on it.

I'm finding this thread very helpful for keeping to my targets, so thanks once again for starting it.

501 and man it was tough. I have the scene, just seem to sit down to write it and freeze up. Not sure how much of it I will keep, but when I edit it at the end, a full sheet of words is easier to edit then just sitting here waiting for the perfect words to come.

May I just say how much more eminently satisfying 500 well placed words are compared to 5000 slathered on a page to try to reach 50k? (Which I did, but, yuck...)
I thought I would take all of December off, just completely burnt out with writing. And then this little butterfly of contemplation came to whisper in my ear. And so I am indulging myself in going slowly, in filling my sentences full of adjective-y goodness even though that's not what you're 'supposed to do'. Ah, solace for the soul.

1,147 new words today, 1,500 printed words, do they still go by that? Was good to write something new, as I have been editing, and working on a basic outline for my next project.

826. It took a while. And that number is over 3 stories. Laughing to myself, some nights it comes too hard. First story only managed 33 words, I liked them, but didnt know where to go from there, was story I hadnt looked at in a month. The second story, well 11 words-one sentence, and moved on.

It took a while, but I found my story for the night and hit 782 words, and they are keepers.

No.
I must admit I am no "writing fool," at present.
Just can't seem to maintain the creative writing focus the past couple of months--perhaps post-novel completion rebound?

I've also been trying to make up for this past year's neglect of the family during the time I was consumed with writing THE KABBALIST. Thus, I took the missus to Paris last week, and the daughter to Sugarloaf this week to ski with her friends (well, "ride/shred" actually); and we're all going to a Matisyahu concert tomorrow evening in Portland. I'll ski with my brother, and buy him lunch, at Sunday River this Friday -- he's proven to be a truly invaluable asset as a proofreader.

Then there are the books I put aside and have now picked up again to read...

In an attempt to jumpstart my creative juices, I allowed myself to begin more than one story (and one intended collaborative novel) in hope one would possess me.

I've completed one <500 word piece: Dying In the Light, from an experience I had as an intern around a life-lesson from Jewish teaching. It was intended for an Israeli on-line English journal, but they had a 150-250 word limit, and I just couldn't get it down to so few words and convey the truth of it.

I completed the outline and wrote 950 words of The Golem of Chester Court this afternoon (while the daughter napped). I had hoped for this to be a short story, but I suspect it will be a novella.

I've got more irons in the fire, and a final read of The Kabbalist to do (and decide to send out copyright permissions or rewrite to remove their need).

Hope to get a few more hours tomorrow for writing.
To you true "fools", I offer my envious respect.

Respectfully,
Dr. Bob

How do you track words for Revision? For me this is lots of cutting, rewriting and editing. Moving, adding, etc...

When your draft is done, do you still write a daily 500+ on top of revisions? For me, revisions is as long if not longer than the writing.

Now all we need to do is make this thread real-time.

We can call it the "pdblake Wordcount Tracker" (which happens to be proportional to the "Wordcaster Envy-Level Tracker").

Posted by pdblake (Member # 9218) on :

I happen to have a bit of software that I wrote to track my wordcounts, targets etc.

This thread is just for showing off

Seriously though, I do find this thread incredibly useful. Since it was started I seem to hit my targets more and more.

I can't wait to join in the party.

Hit 600 words today, and didn't throw it away! I'm sure I'll edit it later, but . . . 600 words, and I did it without breaking a sweat.

Usually, I do these 3500 word stints, but then chucking the whole thing. So far, this is a net positive!

Gotta say I'm excited, and being able to post my 'happy happy' here is a big motivator. We'll see if the trend continues.

I think if I could antibump this thread (i.e. Knock it down one line a day if I write 1000 words) it would give me some added motivation to meet my daily word count goals.

We would need two teams - the bumpers and the antibumpers - and the antibumpers would win if they knocked this thread to the next page. The bumpers would merely be playing defense.

I think I may have hit 1000 today, but I rarely count. But I think it is worthy of one antibump.

Aw crap, I just moved it one line the wrong way.

Wow, I forgot about this thread.

One of the best pieces of writing advice I've ever attempted to apply to my efforts was to pick a daily word count goal, then reach it daily. Prior to that, I've always written something---or performed some sort of task that contributed to one of my stories---every day, but my new word count was almost never a worthy accomplishment. My new daily word count goal has changed quite a few things with the way I'm performing my task, so, for obvious reasons, I'm quite fanatical when it comes to reaching it.

That said, consider me having hit at least 600 words a day for the last month. The next time I post here will be to announce I've upped my goal.

Been a while since I posted here. I wish I could say its because I have been writing up a storm, but I fell in that dang editing phase which I count as writing if I am actually doing it, which I wasnt. You see where I am going here, if I type long enough my word count will be up for the day.

Instead of writing, I have been reading so I guess it counts, but this weekend, I got back on track.

Saturday, New story broke, 1,900 words.

Sunday, Slow start this morning, but added 3,200 words, to finish the story at first draft over just over 5,100 words. So I am stoked.

Been meaning to ask you guys...or at least pdblake, who dominates here...how do you find the time to write that much? In between work and unwinding from work, as well as sleep, I can never manage to, at best, double my five-hundred-word output once in awhile...

Posted by pdblake (Member # 9218) on :

I tend to write at night once the youngest has gone to bed, but write whenever I can make the time and find a bit of quiet:)

I also find it helps to have some kind of structure laid out so I know the general direction I'm going and can just write without having to plot as well.

I always make time to write, within reason, and try to always write 1k a day, though it doesn't always happen. I find I write more if I'm writing a short. Novels tend to be a bit of a slower slog.

The worst bit for me is finishing one and having to plot the next. It always takes a little bit of forcing myself to get going again.

The last three days I was--a writing fool that is.

Saturday and Sunday got 4,000 or so words down. Not as good as some weekend days but better than I've done for a while.

Wrote a story Tuesday. Twice... [Smile] 1,600 and some words
Actually I hand wrote half the story at work then typed it out. It helped that I had most of the story in my mind already. And had more computer time then usual for a Tuesday. Funny thing I had no ending for it in mind. So after I typed it out, I had to leave it for an hour or so and came up with one while I showered--no I didn't take an hour long shower.

I was trying to get it done for a magazine whose deadline was yesterday but after I had a it done and formatted right, spellchecked and proofread, I couldn't find the magazine again. So I didn't send it out after all. Just as well probably, I didn't have time to find all the nitpicks. And the ending may need a bit of revising.

But it was fun.

Posted by LDWriter2 (Member # 9148) on :

Again I was.

Wrote three and ninty percent of another story. The first story was 1,100 words, second might be around 500-it's hand written, have to type it out, the third-nit quite finished-will be 250 to 400 and the last one is fifty words. Wrote it tonight, for a On The Premises mini contest. Can't send it in yet but it's done.
