I don't think I'll be able to get the time off. It is incredibly tempting. Not gonna lie. Utah's a long way from Michigan, though. *sigh*

The word "further" holds a unique significance for the mid-twentieth century social upheaval that is a cultural reflection of Postmodernism. Ken Kesey, flush with the advance from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, bought and outfitted a school bus for a cross country trip, an emulation of Jack Kerouac's On the Road, that are now legendary. Tom Wolfe, Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, interprets the bus journey. The connections between writers of the era and the bus trip are manifold and read like a Who's Who of the Boomer generation's "coolest" counterculture artists.

Anyway, the first "Further" was misspelled "furthur" on the destination placard, at first, and soon corrected. "Further" is itself contrary to Kesey's overt design, greater physical distance meant -- ostensively. The word since its coin has been mixed up with "farther." Further means additional, to a greater degree or extent. By and large, however, "further" use is common for both meanings and, as such, dictionary and usage defined. The further-farther mix-up is as common as the lay-lie, seen-saw, and sit-set mix-ups are. Kesey might've meant the word mix-up for commentary -- he certainly knew of the distinctions. His further-farther usages in novels are distinct. No certainty of that, though a later emulator named his bus "Farther" and was commentary about the word mix-up controversy that is one of those dissentions never to be settled.

Furthermore, Utah lays farther away than I can further afford at this time.

what do you know. i'm only about six hours away by car. never would have thought my transfer to the country might pay off for something for a change.

If you can do it, I'd recommend it, simply because it's bound to be an awesome experience.
