This is a critique group for writers that will be entering a story for the third quarter of 2009 in the Writers of the Future contest (26th year), and do so on an early schedule.

Anyone is welcome to join. If you do though, please follow the directions for such. Currently, the group consists of me:
WriterDan

If you want to join the group for this quarter, please re-post the current names list in a reply and add your name to the bottom.

Deadlines for this quarter's crits are as follows:

March 1st: Start writing
April 21st: First drafts out for crits
May 14th: Second drafts out for crits
June 7th: Mail-in final drafts for Q03

Note: The official mail-in deadline for this quarter is June 30th; however, this group's deadlines are set up so that all entries can be mailed well before the deadline and hopefully beat the rush at the end of the quarter.

When you send out drafts for critique, please do so in a generic format so that everyone will be able to open your file. (eg. rtf, txt. Pdf is okay too, but won't allow for in-text comments.)

Sign up! And let's get busy writing!

Yup, it's that time already. Man, I'm in trouble. Thought I'd still put this up anyhow. Get people thinking. Nothing wrong with that, eh?

Posted by darklight (Member # 5213) on :

Well, I haven't quite got my present story polished and ready to send off but since that's in part due to a flash of inspiration and my starting of a new story for next quarter, I have to put my name down. I'm really excited about this one!

Maybe we should put a message up on the Open Discussion board, to let the new members who might not have wandered this far down know about us. What you think?

Done. Good idea. We'll see what comes of it.

What the hell...I'll throw my hat in the ring. I haven't started my story yet, but I've been noodling on it for awhile. Plus I haven't entered anything for WofF in a couple years, maybe. Time to get back on the horse.

So that everyone knows:

There are typically two groups that we sort into. Those that try to turn in stories by the real deadline, and those that try to turn things in a bit early (us). The regular schedule group will be starting up a thread for the next quarter in a couple of weeks. So, you can pick which group you want to join. Your choice. And, no we won't be offended if you bail to join the other group. We usually end up doing some cross-correlating toward the end of the quarter anyhow.

Well, I'm tinkering on something that will probably turn into my next WotF entry. I've decided, however, to make it as perfect as possible before sending it in. In other words, though I have already begun, I don't care if it doesn't make it in until Q1'10. On the other hand, if it comes together in time, I'll be in with ya'll.

I just finished the first draft tonight of a story that might work. I don't know what is good for WOTF, being new to all this.

It's a frothy fantasy.

Would someone like to do a quick scan of it to see if it's appropriate? It's 6500 words and the first 13 lines appear as 'Heart on a Sleeve' on the Fragments for Short Stories.

Let me know.

I want to join. I've never done this competition and I'm scared silly to try and maybe my story really sucks, but trying can't hurt right? (this is my personal pep talk to get me to do it) I want to expand on the story I used for IB's short story contest.

If you're in the group and ready for a crit send my way, anyone(this means you, snapper. Oh, BTW this doesn't necessarily mean I am going to crit you an extra time.)

Not sure what I am going to do this quarter. I've got some stories kicking around.

Should I do a comedy, a sci-fi western, brief space opera... Any opinions. I know I am not going to send Joni that tired story I've sent her twice already. Last time it elicited a personal note from a KDW. Who is KDW?

Owasm, Kitti, and everyone else in the group: send me your story when it's ready. If I can't finish my crit the day I receive your story, I'll reply with an estimated time for my crit.

Patrick, if you can write comedy, I say that's what you should do.

Okay, I'll do it.

But you are responsible for whatever mess this creates. I'll put that on the cover page. Dear, slush reader, please forgive the following story. The author claims no responsibility for its overall insanity and rather blames it on snapper. Also, hopes you do not think this is representative of the author's work and hopes you also forgive the typos which snapper is also to blame, for reasons I will not disclose at this time.

Hey, after a day of remastering a computer, twice, trying to get the internet to work, twice, installing anti virus software, twice, cleaning, washing, cooking meals, three times, going to the supermarket and taking care of various animals, I wrote 2,500 words and got my story finsihed! I'm so happy to have gotten a story done this early into the quarters.

After seeing IB's post in the short story section, it reminded me of something I was going to say a few days ago. Just to be safe, in order not to find your entry disqualified, its good advice not to post your story in the short story section with the title it was be send out with.

Its a sensible precaution we should all follow.

[This message has been edited by darklight (edited April 12, 2009).]

Posted by Kitti (Member # 7277) on :

I'm feeling dense... why would that (possibly) disqualify a story?

Posted by InarticulateBabbler (Member # 4849) on :

If you "publish" the title on the web, and any of the judges can see it, the anonymous state has been compromised and it could be invalidated. So, it's better to use something more ambiguous--unless you're not very attached to the title.

Posted by darklight (Member # 5213) on :

Kitti, its all to do with possibly matching the story with the author. As the contest is anonymous, disqualification would occur if someone conected to the contest happened to recognise a name, and a title and put them together. There's probably little chance of that happening, but there's no point taking the chance. That's why our names only appear on the title page, which are then taken away when the story is sent for judging. No names of the mauscript itself.

It's just as good to give the story a 'working title' for the purposes of the boards here.

Hope I've cleared that up.

Okay, so I up and die and everyone else goes into overdrive? What's the deal with that?

So, yeah, I got through my annual review and they're letting me stick around in school to finish my graduate work. Have to get moving on it though. And then the day after my presentation, I got the flu. I mean the full out kill-you kind of flu. Still recovering.

And I need to start my story, which will happen tonight. Just trying to find the gumption to do so whilst running on 50% batteries and too many cough drops. Glad I already have this one plotted.

So, now that I'm somewhat "back" from the dead, anyone that wants to can send me their drafts for WotF stories. I'll do my best to get them back asap. Thanks for putting up with my sketchy attendance these last few weeks. Hope to make this quarter the best one yet. Later all.

Posted by darklight (Member # 5213) on :

Hey, WriterDan, great news about school. Not so good about the flu--hope you get over that soon.

I'm gonna give my story a good going through, taking into consideration all the critiques I've gotten so far, before I send it out again. If it's still ok, I'll probably send it over to you in a week or two.

Looking forward to reading your great story! Now get writing... go on

Okay, if all the submissions seem redundant and every other line appears to be repeated, it may be a sign that you are seeing double and you need to up the Motrin.

So, I'm all up to date with my critiques. I'm sitting here idle cos I want to give my story a little more cooling off, and since I haven't had that light bulb moment I get when I have a great idea I want to put down on paper, I'm here if anyone wants me to look at a story or anything really.

I want to start a new story, but the ideas I'm getting right now I don't feel are worth the effort.

Posted by satate (Member # 8082) on :

Sorry I still haven't gotten to all the crits yet. I haven't forgotten, I just had a crazy week. The one day I tell my four year old not to worry about fires, that even if there is one the fire alarm will go off, the fire alarm goes off and water begins streaming down the walls of our apartment and dripping out of all light sockets and electrical outlets. Things are finally back to normal, our carpet has dried out, and I'll be finishing the crits as soon as I can.

Posted by aspirit (Member # 7974) on :

My story is still in pieces, and other concerns are preoccupying my mind. I need to withdraw from the group. No one is waiting for a review from me, right?

Posted by satate (Member # 8082) on :

Can I have a few more days, like two? My story's almost finished and I know the deadline is today, but if I just had another night of writing I'd have it finished.

Posted by Kitti (Member # 7277) on :

I'd still be happy to read it in a day or two. Enough of us "cheated" and submitted early that I don't think it'd be a problem.

Posted by darklight (Member # 5213) on :

satate, don't worry, the dates are more guidelines than anything else. It's been quite a stroke of luck that many of us have even gotten something ready for crit this early on. We're usually still on the first round of crits by the second deadline, so don't worry about those dates.

Simply put, most of us here, the old timers especially, are usually around to crit at any time. Don't rush the piece just to get it done for a deadline, finish it when you're ready, then send it out.

Posted by WriterDan (Member # 6456) on :

Exactly.

Really, the only requirement that this group has is that you give critiques if you expect to get them in return.

But deadlines? Bleh. We're just "aspiring" authors. Soon as we can get the story thing down, then we'll work on deadlines. So, try for em, yeah. But don't get all caught up with specific dates. 'Course, these are our deadlines I'm talking about. There are some deadlines that you MUST adhere to. Like, the publisher's deadlines. But enough said about that. We're here for support. Looking forward to seeing some more stories. Working on critting those I have. And...um...my story will be around sometime soon.

[This message has been edited by WriterDan (edited April 21, 2009).]

Don't talk to me about deadlines. Particularly self-imposed ones. But I should get my chapters off to the agent by this weekend (::stern glare at self: , and then I'll be good for working on other projects.

So come Saturday or so, I should be ready to do crits... and to remember that I'm participating in this contest. Well, at least I'm using a story that's already past the first draft, so I won't be too terribly behind everyone else!

Posted by satate (Member # 8082) on :

Anyone up for reading mine a second time? I've put in an entire new middle which - hopefully - makes the plot a bit less straightforward and tells you more about the characters. Of course, now it's 2500 words longer and my MC is begging me to make her into a novel... or a series of novels.... We've compromised: she can start a transdimensional war, but only if she snags an HM first ;-)

Man, I don't even want to go here, but I feel obligated to seeing as how this topic has dropped down so far in the queue.

My story is...going...well, not exactly in circles, but yeah. It's turning into something good, I think. As a plus, I finished a quick rewrite of a scene last night (first draft not yet finished--I know, bad boy. SMACK!) Was also able to get past a "sticking point" in my plot too. Everything seems to be a go now, and I'm going to buckle down and do my best to get it out in the next week or so.

Everyone else doing well? How're the stories coming? Drafting? Rewrites? Replots? I know a few of you have even already sent them in. Huzzah! You'll be all ready for the next grouping for Early submission Q04 that's going to be put up...um...oh my. Next week. I have to be kidding me.

First draft, done and out!

Phew.

Chance to breathe...

Okay, time to get busy with the next one.

If anyone didn't get an email with my story that is open to critting it, let me know and I'll send a copy your way.

Later.

I'm looking for some people to crit "Pod Soldier". It's the story that WriterDan and Snapper critiqued for me last quarter that I didn't get polished up in time. It is now much improved--thanks Dan and Snapper! It's pretty short--about 3K words.

Also, next week I can read a few people's stories too.

Whoever wants a fresh read (I haven't seen any of the stories yet this quarter), send your story my way.

Chris

I finally finished mine. Alas it is well over the word limit, I wont be sending it out to anyone in this group, as I wont be sending it to WOTF. My thanks to those who supported my effort to finish this story with encourageing remarks and apox on Snapper for suggesting the confounding theme.

Good luck everybody.

And Snapper, that was just a joke.

Hey!

I woke up with these red welts everywhere. Where did they come from?
Now I'm curious. How did my shred it into a thousand pieces and burn it suggestion turn into a 17000+ idea?

Hey guys! Sorry I haven't been around! I realize that I owe several of you critiques and I'm totally behind (like ridiculously behind). I'm just posting to apologize. I'm really sorry. I thought I would have the energy to do this (I just finished chemo a few weeks ago) but I'm still sick off and on and having a tough time getting everything caught up from my illness. The sky is clearing, but I'm so behind I'm pretty sure I won't be able to catch up.

Those that critterd my story "Blood Kiss" just poke me when you need a story looked at. I'll make time for it.

Again, I'm really sorry.

Seven days and counting. Time for minor tweaks and finishing touches. Hope everyone is coming up ready. After missing last quarter I'm nearly beside myself with excitement about this one. Good luck to everyone.

I just sent mine out.

Thanks to everyone who helped turn a sow's ear into a silk purse that still suspiciously smells like bacon.

Good Luck to all!

Mine's in the mail as well and thanks for all the help with it.

pixydust, I don't think you have to apologize with an excuse like that. I just hope the chemo did the job, so you don't ever have to experience it again.

All laud and honor to Snapper, ruler of the writing universe and all-knowing consort of the holy muse! I bow to your prescience.

<<Several hours of chanting and prostrating ensue, after which I come to my senses and realize just where I am.>>

So, I ended up cutting just over 5k words from my first draft. lol! When I went back and realized that last night (well, actually this morning at about 4am) I nearly laughed out loud and woke everyone else in the house. Granted, I did add about 3k of that back during work on the 2nd and 3rd drafts, but man...now this thing sings.

My story is off!

Just wanted to thank everyone that sent me a crit. The responses I got were pivotal in making my entry this quarter into something really good. And I even finished it three-and-a-half hours earlier than I normally do. Ha, ha! Stress-be-gone!

Good luck to everyone. Hope to see you all next quarter.
