Goal for last week:
Really spend some quiet time developing the plot of Bartholomew Prinn.
Oh boy, did Fred and I do some work! Over the last week I’ve probably scribbled less than 100 words down on my scratch pad; but I’ve almost got a whole story sitting inside my head. My biggest problem last time was trying to make a story about someone with a phobia a little more ‘heavy-weight’ and shape it to explore a part of the human condition. After spending days letting random thoughts about character, plot, and premise collide and bump off each other in my head, suddenly, there was stillness in the “Ah-ha!” moment of my thoughts. Premise:Cowards die a thousand deaths.
The actual quote from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar is: Cowards die many times before their deaths. The valiant never taste of death but once.
The point is that I have a premise shaped by plot and character; I now have to let that premise hone and polish plot and character to create a unified whole. I can now actually ‘see’ every major component of the story, plot, and nearly every moment of every scene as if I was watching a movie. I also have layers of depth and two recurring motifs that speak to the story’s premise. All in all, a good weeks work.
Last week I also started writing my first essay for Battle School—Why have a war at all? I thought I would start by defining what war is; inadvertently I opened up a Pandora’s box full of worms. This led me into a study of the philosophical ideas surrounding and concerning the nature of war and why we do it. And that isn’t anywhere I wanted to go. So, I’ll cherry-pick what I need and post a link to the article that got me all hot and bothered.
Goals for this week:
It’s time to fully develop Bartholomew Prinn’s character. I'm actually looking for that elusive catalyst which will turn coward into hero on a dime--and still make inevitable sense.
Block out my essay on Why have a war at all? and work on its implications in storytelling.

While I am here for another matter I say yes I worked on novels.
Journey of Mystery is just past half way I think--maybe as much as around 65-70% done. I am guess-amating 88,000 words to 100,000.
A week ago I worked a tiny bit on "Learning CurveX2" which is the book after "Above My Pay GradeX2" if anyone here remembers that one.
