Mostly the story of an alien, and his rise to power in his society. The aliens have a nightmare society from our perspective, and given their biology (which I suppose could happen), the civilization seems almost inevitable. How I hope this never happened anywhere in the universe!
The writing isn't the best in places, but I have rarely seen aliens done so well. Check it out, but prepared to feel disturbed.

I bought a copy. Started it but was put off immediately by the really lame opening. I'll try to go on, but the writing there in the opening would have never hooked me. I'm pushing on because you said the alienness is worth reading.
