Since the subject of Temeraire by Naomi Novik came up in the Open Discussions area, I decided to put the first paragraph of the second book, Throne of Jade here and see what others think.
quote: The day was unseasonably warm for November, but in some misguided deference to the Chinese embassy, the fire in the Admiralty boardroom had been heaped excessively high, and Laurence was standing directly before it. He had dressed with especial care, in his best uniform, and all throughout the long and unbearable interview the lining of his thick bottle-green broadcloth coat had been growing steadily more sodden with sweat.
If you hadn't already been hooked by the first book, would you read on?

I have not read the first book, but this intro is well-written so I would read on to see what the interview is about. "Chinese embassy" and "Admiralty boardroom" add to my interest. I confess that how well-written a novel is is one of my prime criteria for continuing to read it. Probably the reason I have a hard time reading what I've written.
